SUMMARY:Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment for a Changing Dairy
DESCRIPTION:Dairy production has changed dramatically in the past 30 years\, with a shift from many small farms to fewer large farms. This increase in production intensity mirrors similar trends throughout the livestock industry\, and it potentially changes the nature of infectious disease transmission from herd to humans\, particularly via environmental routes like groundwater and surface water. However\, the significance of this change to human health has not been fully explored. This presentation will describe how quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) can be a useful tool in studying infectious disease transmission on a changing dairy landscape\, provide recent examples of QMRAs relevant to the Wisconsin dairy industry\, and propose a QMRA-based research agenda for proactively addressing future challenges. \nLearn more here.

SUMMARY:Dairy Summit
DESCRIPTION:In addition to research presentations\, there will be three panel sessions designed to stimulate ideas and discussion:\n\n\nA diverse panel of farmers will discuss important topics related to their unique farming systems and how current and future Hub-funded research can address these challenges.\nOpportunities and innovations in the supply chain will be the focus of a processor panel. This group will discuss how with Hub can enhance current resources available to existing and aspiring processors.\nA legislative panel discussion about support for the Hub and Wisconsin agriculture will feature three advocates for agriculture and dairy: Sen. Howard Marklein (R-Spring Green)\, Rep. Dave Considine (D-Baraboo) and Rep. Tony Kurtz (R-Wonewoc).\n\n\nFinishing out the day will be a virtual tour of Pioneer Farm\, UW-Platteville’s 430-acre\, 180-cow teaching\, research\, and outreach farm. UW-Platteville will serve as the virtual host for the event.\nLearn more here.
