SUMMARY:Producer Discovery Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The first Producer Discovery Workshop: ‘Federal Orders: Their History and Their Future\,’ features Dana Coale\, the Deputy Administrator of Agricultural Marketing Services – Dairy Program with USDA. In her role\, Ms. Coale leads programs impacting the dairy industry to facilitate the efficient marketing of milk and dairy products. She’ll provide a review of the structure of federal orders\, how they operate\, and their value to the industry. Ms. Coale will also discuss proposed changes to the orders that are being considered by the dairy industry. \nThe second workshop ‘Understanding the Milk Market & Your Management Tools\,’ features Dr. Mark Stephenson\, Director of Dairy Policy Analysis at UW-Madison and Travis Glaser\, agent and co-owner of ARM Services\, an ag risk management agency based in Barron\, Wis. Mr. Stephenson will review the milk market forecast for 2022 while Mr. Glaser will share his insight on building a risk management strategy. SUMMARY:Organic Grass Fed Dairy: Demographics\, Management\, and Cost of Production
DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, the University of Vermont received an USDA OREI Grant to Advance Grass-Fed Dairy: A Whole Systems Approach to Enhancing Productivity\, Quality\, and Farm Viability in the U.S (OREI 2018-51300-28515). \nOne primary objective was to understand the economic and production metrics for grass-fed dairy systems through implementation of a national survey\, production and economic benchmarking on farms in VT and NY. This session will describe the characteristics and demographics of grass-fed dairy farms from our national survey\, including herd sizes\, acreage\, and management systems. We’ll then take a deeper look at some of the data from our smaller northeast region surveys which include the grass-fed cost of production (cost per cwt) and more detail on farm management and production. \nInfo here.
