SUMMARY:Leasing Your Land
DESCRIPTION:As a landowner\, you want to be a responsible steward of your land and maintain its natural assets for future generations. Soil is one of the most important assets of land\, but it’s not always obvious how to work with an operator to protect it. A good relationship and a strong\, fair lease can put an owner and operator on the same page regarding soil health. In this series\, presenters will start at the beginning to help you better understand your soil\, conservation practices\, and how to develop a good lease. You’ll also receive a lease template and resources so you can keep learning!\n\n\nMonday\, November 9 – Understanding Your Farmland\nWednesday\, November 11 – Protecting Soil and Water\nMonday\, November 16 – Developing a Farmland Lease\nLearn more here.

SUMMARY:A New Vision for the Yahara River Estuary
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, we’ll hear from representatives of the Dane County Land & Water Resources Department\, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR)\, UW-Madison\, City of Madison\, and the Town of Westport as they work together to create a long-term vision for a portion of the Cherokee-Yahara River Estuary. The approximately 670-acre project area represents the primary inlet of water into Lake Mendota and is designated an Area of Special Natural Resource Interest (ASNRI) by the WDNR. Located on the north side of Lake Mendota\, stakeholders seek to develop a long-term rehabilitation plan that will enhance (i) recreation\, (ii) fisheries and wildlife\, (iii) water quality and vegetation\, and (iv) erosion and sediment trapping in the estuary. Key efforts include dedicated outreach initiatives such as public meetings\, online surveys\, and workshops to better understand local needs. Our speakers will report results from the joint effort and outcomes of the public engagement process. \nLearn more here.

SUMMARY:Profitability Strategies: Lessons Learned Farming Regenerative
DESCRIPTION:Tune in for this panel with three farmers – who have\, together\, used regenerative practices for over three decades – as they discuss the mistakes they made and how they would do it differently to maximize success. This webinar will cover:\n\n\nHow these farmers started out\, whether bringing on cover crops\, no-till\, rotational grazing\, or another beneficial farming practice\nThe mistakes made and solutions discovered after years of trial and error and how growers starting out now can have an easier path to success\nThe strength of Indigo’s tools and data for rapidly integrating regenerative farming practices\n\nLearn more here.

SUMMARY:Practical Measures of the Soil Microbiome: How do Crop Advisors Use the Data?
DESCRIPTION:Measuring and assessing soil health are critical for understanding how changes in agronomic management practices affect the capability of soil to support cropping systems. In this presentation\, the Soil Health Institute will focus on explaining measurements of the soil microbiome. Understanding the soil microbiome is a new frontier\, yet critical to successful regenerative agriculture and sustainable crop production. Measurements of soil microbes include phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analyses\, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR)\, 16s ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) amplicon sequencing\, and metagenomics. Though these measurements are still being explored\, the Soil Health Institute\, through this webinar\, aims to provide attendees with a practical understanding of these measurements and describe what kind of information these measurements yield. Insights and examples from the North American Project to Evaluate Soil Health Measurements will be shared to provide a contextual understanding of each measurement. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Supporting Climate Action: Forest Service Research Perspectives and Priorities
DESCRIPTION:The Northern Research Station (NRS) is one of seven research stations of the USDA Forest Service that provide scientific information and decision tools to help land managers and communities practice sustainable stewardship of their lands and waterways. Based in the twenty-state region of the Northeast and North Central U.S.\, NRS scientists and staff conduct multi-disciplinary research with diverse partners and practitioners to address the nation’s most pressing forest conservation challenges. Understanding and adapting to climate change is a major emphasis – NRS is a consortium member of the Northeast Climate Adaptation Science Center\, hosts two USDA Climate Hubs\, and leads the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science. This webinar will present the station’s climate science portfolio\, current research priorities\, and a number of promising efforts to help curb the impacts of climate change to water\, land\, and people. \nLearn more here.
