SUMMARY:Wetland Butterflies in Wisconsin
DESCRIPTION:Mike Reese is a self-taught insect enthusiast. Now retired\, he has been a cook\, botanist\, high school math teacher\, golf and basketball coach\, and high school librarian. While he says he’s no Lepidoptera expert (just a guy who “spent lots of time wandering around\, getting my feet wet and looking for whatever happens to be flying by”)\, others might disagree. He first started learning about butterflies with his son by exploring every nook and cranny of the prairies\, swamps\, and other nature near their home in Wautoma. He’s actively involved in the North American Butterfly Association\, for which he moderates the national butterfly sighting pages\, as well as the Southern Wisconsin Butterfly Association. As a photographer\, he’s captured images of butterflies\, dragonflies\, damselflies\, tiger beetles\, and robber flies. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Recovery of the monarch butterfly: Federal and state legislation that can provide hope for this iconic animal
DESCRIPTION:Monarch butterflies are one of North America’s most iconic animals. Weighing less than a penny\, monarchs can fly up to 3000 miles from summer breeding grounds to overwintering sites in Mexico and have captured the imagination of generations of people as one of our largest and most striking butterflies. Unfortunately\, North American monarchs are threatened with extinction due to habitat loss\, pesticide use\, disease and climate change. Scott will discuss both current and proposed legislation that could help to protect and restore habitat for the monarch butterfly. \nInfo here.
