SUMMARY:Termination Dates for Cereal Rye in Soybeans
DESCRIPTION:Join hosts Sam and Jon to discuss their experiences and findings from trials investigating delayed termination of cereal rye in soybeans. They’ll give some background about their motivations to conduct on-farm research and explain how their original research questions evolved into an on-going trial looking at the impacts of not terminating cereal rye and leaving it to re-seed itself. \nLearn more and register here.

SUMMARY:Prairie Strips and Conservation on Rented Ground - Management and Prescribed Fire
DESCRIPTION:Prairie strips are a practice that more farmers and landowners are using to reintegrate prairie into Iowa’s agricultural landscape\, providing numerous water quality and wildlife benefits in the process. Join landowner Eric Hoien\, Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation and the ISU STRIPS team to learn more about designing\, establishing\, and managing prairie strips and how to work with land tenants to achieve conservation goals.  In part 1 of this virtual event\, landowner Eric Hoien and ISU STRIPS farmer liaison Tim Younquist will discuss prairie strip management and prescribed fire. See pictures and videos from Eric’s recent prairie burn and learn more about how fire can be used by landowners to manage prairie strips. \nLearn more and register here.

SUMMARY:Conservation Drainage - Managing Water for the Future
DESCRIPTION:Join the North Central Climate Collaborative for their next webinar Conservation Drainage – Managing Water for the Future featuring John McMaine. \nTile drainage is widespread throughout the Midwest.  As weather patterns continue to shift toward more precipitation outside of the growing season and less precipitation during the growing season\, water management will need to continue to adapt to provide resilience. Conservation drainage is a concept that incorporates methods of storing water or treating water in the landscape or edge-of-field to increase resilience and improve water quality while maintaining the agronomic benefits of tile drainage.  This webinar will cover some of the recent research in conservation drainage\, how they can be incorporated into new and existing practices\, and what the future of conservation drainage might look like. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Tillage Management and Structural Conservation Practices
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, the presenter will compare tillage management practices and structural conservation practices in use by growers in 2013-2016 to those in use in 2003-2006 to evaluate changes in practice adoption between the two time periods. Tillage management system practices include conventional tillage\, no-till\, and conservation tillage; structural conservation practices include buffer strips\, filters\, terraces\, contour farming\, and strip cropping.  Approaches to tillage management and structural conservation practices used by growers have shifted significantly between the two periods\, with the trend toward less tillage and more comprehensive cropland conservation treatment. Information presented will include conservation plan data from NRCS field offices. \nFind connection information here.

SUMMARY:Using Conservation to Improve Farm Profitability - 60-Inch-Row Corn + Interseeded Cover Crops
DESCRIPTION:Nathan and Sarah farm using in-field conservation practices that reduce soil loss\, increase soil health\, reduce inputs\, and provide forage for livestock. They also target edge-of-field conservation on marginal lands to provide water quality and wildlife benefits while improving return on investment on farmed acres. We’ll chat with Nathan twice over the course of the season to learn about conservation he’s using on his farm to increase profitability.  In part 1\, Nathan will discuss planting corn in 60-inch rows with interseeded cover crops\, and he’ll share the environmental and agronomic benefits he sees – or hopes to see – from the practice. \nLearn more and register here.
