SUMMARY:Water Quality Trading
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will feature presentations by two experts\, Brian Brandt and Mark Kieser\, who are currently working on projects to advance water quality trading programs for farmers and ranchers. Mark Kieser is a Senior Scientist/Principal at Kieser & Associates\, LLC\, an environmental science and engineering firm. Mark is a specialist in water quality trading (WQT) program and policy development with 25 years of experience. Mark has examined trading in 28 states and is now actively working on unique variations of market-based approaches for water quality investments\, particularly in the ag sector. He will speak on the current state of the traditional\, regulatory-driven WQT interests\, but importantly\, where trading programs may be heading towards supporting supply chain-driven efforts focused on agricultural sustainability. Brian Brandt is the Agriculture Conservation Innovations Director at American Farmland Trust. Brian led AFT’s efforts to develop the first multiple-credit ecosystem services market in the country. Brian’s presentation will be focusing on the lessons learned from the Ohio River Basin Water Quality Trading Project and the development of a new voluntary water quality trading market. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:How's My Waterway
DESCRIPTION:An updated version of How’s My Waterway (HMW) was released publicly in June 2020. HMW provides a comprehensive overview of water quality data and information in the United States on three different scales: community\, state\, and national. HMW pulls in data from eight databases across EPA through web services with the goal of answering questions about aquatic life\, eating fish\, swimming\, drinking water\, restoration and protection. This demo is meant to help users:\n\nExplore information about their drinking water\, local stream conditions\, and whether their waterways are suitable for swimming or eating fish and if they support aquatic life.\nDiscover if their waterways are being monitored and the location of local monitoring stations.\nLearn what issues might be affecting their waterways.\n\nParticipants will feel empowered to communicate water quality information to their community in order to restore and protect their waters.\n\nLearn more here.

SUMMARY:The Impacts of Climate Change on Forests and Wildlife
DESCRIPTION:The climate is changing\, and it is impacting forests in many ways. The magnitude of continued accelerated change requires adaptation strategies aim to maintain healthy and productive forests. As forests are placed under additional stress\, it is also critical that we consider how wildlife may respond to a shifting climate and important forest habitats that they depend on. For birds\, there is natural ecological link to the importance of trees and forest structure and in many cases birds are often used as indicators of forest conditions and management goals. Therefore\, understanding how bird and tree species habitats may respond to ongoing climate change will be critical to meeting conservation and management goals. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Can a Landowner Make Money Raising Grassfed Beef?
DESCRIPTION:This webinar’s presenter is Jim Munsch who was contracted by Trout Unlimited.  Land use decisions significantly affect soil loss and runoff. The effect is pronounced in the three-state Driftless Area.  Managed grazing and long-term ground cover are strong mitigators of erosion\, but can those land use decisions have positive financial outcomes? Both of these practices are integral to the raising of grassfed beef. We studied the financial outcomes for a dozen farms in the Driftless Area who are raising grassfed beef with the goal of answering that question. This webinar will show the results of that study\, point to “best practices” used by these producers\, and point to methods that will help a wider group of cattle enterprises. \nRegister by noon on September 7. SUMMARY:Exploring Small Grains for Forage and Options for Portable Watering
DESCRIPTION:Are you a young grazier wanting to explore integrating small grains for forage and other uses? How about options for portable watering systems when you are grazing remote pastures? Are you a seasoned grazier with direct experience and/or connections relevant to these topics that could help a beginning grazier get going? Hop on the Online Pasture Talk featuring Nicollet grazier Dan Coffman. Dan will share his experiences incorporating Kernza and a heritage winter wheat in fall 2019 into his crop rotation to diversify\, build soil\, produce grain\, and provide grazing forage for livestock. Dan also plans to walk us through his innovative mobile watering system he converted from an old silage wagon that can also store portable fencing supplies\, tools\, and approximately 20 hay bales. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Enhancing Investment in Soil Health and Carbon Storage: Frontiers for Linking Finance and Carbon Accounting
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this web seminar is to support investment-oriented actions promoting soil health and carbon storage by improving the accounting of soil carbon sequestration. We seek to answer the question: How can soil carbon accounting improve to support investment-oriented actions promoting soil health and carbon storage? To this end\, participants will examine opportunities for action using novel methods and frontier technologies that enable linking technical practices with finance and policy for accurate and cost-efficient SOC accounting. The workshop will also examine how improved SOC accounting can support three priority lines for action (Vermeulen\, et al. 2019): policy\, business development\, and value for farmers to promote scaling up of investment in soil health and carbon storage. The key output of the meeting will be a summary of the state of the art of the component methodologies or a combination thereof\, and what is needed next to make these most useable for investors to account for SOC sequestration.\nLearn more here.

SUMMARY:What Makes A Wetland Internationally Important?
DESCRIPTION:The Lower Wisconsin Riverway stretches 92 miles from the Prairie du Sac Dam to its confluence with the Mississippi River. A vital\, wild recreational and educational resource\, it also harbors important cultural sites and is one of the nation’s most significant riverine systems. Most critical are its wide variety of wetland\, riverine\, and upland plant-animal communities\, which are joined by intact natural ecotones into a large and functioning ecosystem. Take a virtual tour of the Lower Wisconsin Riverway with ecologist Mike Mossman\, who will share the important ecological and cultural features of the riverway and how they warranted its designation as a Wetland of International Importance. Mike will also discuss some of the threats facing the river and will certainly share some of his river stories. \nRegister here.
