SUMMARY:Shiitake Mushroom Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Drs. Glen Stanosz and Scott Bowe\, UW-Madison\, for an introduction to Shiitake mushroom cultivation. This hands-on demonstration will begin with a discussion of the life cycle of Shiitake mushrooms. We will demonstrate how hardwood logs are prepared\, inoculated\, and tended to grow these delicious mushrooms. Come ready to work! Participants will be asked to form an assembly line to prepare and inoculate logs that can be taken home at the end of the session. You will have an opportunity to perform each step in the Shiitake process so you have the skills to build your own mushroom garden. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Diseased\, Decayed\, Defective\, and Dangerous: When Good Trees Go Bad
DESCRIPTION:Trees provide a variety of benefits to society. But trees also lose branches or break when forces exceed their structural strength or the root-soil connection. Tree failure can cause severe damage to houses and other structures\, deny access or use of infrastructure\, and injure or kill people. Landowners have legal “duty of care” for trees on their properties\, including responsibility to obtain expert assistance when appropriate. Learn how qualified arborists assess tree risk by estimating likelihood of tree failure and impact\, and the consequences to property and people. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:NRCS and Streambank Soil Bio-engineering
DESCRIPTION:The subject presentation will provide an overview of the use of stream bank soil bio-engineering practice used as part of NRCS conservation work. Both plant based and structural based practices will be discussed. \nFor more than 80 years\, NRCS and its predecessor agencies have worked in close partnerships with farmers and ranchers\, local and state governments\, and other federal agencies to maintain healthy and productive working landscapes. It is NRCS policy to provide ecosystem-based assistance to all our customers to help them improve ecosystem health\, restore damaged ecosystems\, and sustain natural resources. NRCS has been involved in stream bank stabilization and restoration since the beginning of the agency. Stabilization and restoration techniques have ranged from hard protection to stream bank soil bio-engineering. Stream bank soil bio-engineering is defined as the use of live and dead plant materials in combination with natural and synthetic support materials for slope stabilization\, erosion reduction\, and vegetative establishment. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Common Highways and Forever Free: Milwaukee Lakefront Tour
DESCRIPTION:An afternoon boat ride from 4-6pm where participants will hear all about the issues surrounding the Public Trust Doctrine from the water. Our speaker panel includes Michael Cain\, co-chair of WGF’s Public Trust and Wetlands work group\, Historian John Gurda\, Rhonda Nordstrom\, Water City Program Coordinator with Milwaukee Water Commons\, and Cheryl Nenn\, Riverkeeper with Milwaukee’s Riverkeeper. The boat tour will be followed by a social hour from 6-7pm at the Sail Loft restaurant. \nThe Wisconsin Constitution declares that all navigable waters (where it is possible to float a canoe or small boat) are “common highways and forever free” and held in trust by the state for the public good. Also known as the Public Trust Doctrine\, the Wisconsin DNR is charged with protecting our navigable waters and their water quality as well as peoples’ rights to recreate on them and enjoy their scenic beauty. \nWith its miles of Lake Michigan lakefront and riverfront property\, Milwaukee’s water has long been a source of pride and a defining characteristic for the city. Since the Clean Water Act was signed into law 50 years ago\, the Milwaukee\, Menomonee and Kinnikinic rivers have seen a transformation from heavily polluted with toxic chemicals and industrial waste to a recovering system shared by fish\, birds\, and people alike. \nDespite these successes\, Milwaukee’s lakefront and riverfronts have long been at the center of Public Trust Doctrine disputes. Challenges arise when private developers or businesses attempt to privatize lakebed areas which must be maintained for public use and enjoyment. Disputes highlight social justice and equity issues related to access as well as threats to surrounding water quality and scenic enjoyment. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Blanchard’s cricket frog (Acris blanchardi) spring movement ecology in Wisconsin
DESCRIPTION:The Blanchard’s cricket frog (Acris blanchardi) experienced widespread declines in distribution and abundance along its northern range in the mid-to-late 1900s. Since then\, species experts have begun monitoring Blanchard’s cricket frogs and researching the key facets of their ecology and life history to help prevent future declines and manage for healthy and sustainable populations. The objectives of research done in 2010-11 were to study the phenology\, movements\, habitat use\, and life history of Blanchard’s cricket frogs in southwest Wisconsin through visual encounter surveys and marking techniques. The results of this research were recently published in the journal Herpetological Conservation and Biology. Join Wisconsin DNR conservation biologist Andrew Badje to hear about past and current conservation efforts for this species in Wisconsin and to learn how recent results are driving conservation efforts for this species in Wisconsin today. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Adding Small-scale Dairy Processing for Farm Diversity
DESCRIPTION:Come and hear Cella Langer and Emmet Fisher share the story of how they started their small\, rotationally grazed dairy cow herd and on-farm\, Grade A creamery. This field day will include a tour of silvopastures\, seasonal milking parlor\, and Grade A dairy plant. Learn how the creamery fits into the bigger picture of their farm business CSA model. They’ll also cover direct marketing\, navigating the regulatory process for starting a dairy plant\, and answer any questions about starting and running this type of enterprise. There will also be milk and yogurt for sale from their farm store! \nThe 2022 growing season is Emmet and Cella’s 10th season in production. They raise vegetables for 75 CSA members who all pick up on the farm through their free-choice\, market-style CSA from April-December. They also rotationally graze pigs\, laying hens\, beef cattle\, and four dairy cows which they milk for their on-farm Grade A Dairy plant. Most of the eggs\, meat\, milk and yogurt produced is sold through the CSA and a couple small wholesale channels. They cultivate small amounts of cut flowers and shiitake mushrooms as well. They value feeding their community and their own family as much as possible from the farm through as much of the year as possible. Their farming model is built on a belief in diversity\, small-scale production\, self-reliance\, and minimal inputs. They follow organic practices in all our enterprises\, though are not certified organic. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Walleye and Yellow Perch Recruitment Trends in Northern Wisconsin
DESCRIPTION:Some northern Wisconsin lakes have shown declining trends in walleye recruitment over the last two decades. Recent research suggests that walleye and yellow perch recruitment are influenced by similar factors\, but the current status of yellow perch recruitment in northern Wisconsin is unknown. The objective of this study is to determine if lakes with declining walleye recruitment also show signs of declining yellow perch recruitment. In 2021\, six lakes located in the Minocqua area were sampled and additional lakes will be sampled this year. Learn more about this study and what the preliminary data show from AnaSara Gillem\, a Master’s student in the Wisconsin Cooperative Fishery Research Unit at UW-Stevens Point. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Innovative Stormwater Management: How Using Biochar-Amended Iron-Enhanced Sand Filters Can Reduce the Flow of Bacteria (E. coli) and Phosphorus Into Our Water Bodies
DESCRIPTION:As rainfall events become more frequent and intense\, watershed management becomes paramount. Elevated bacteria levels in the nation’s surface waters are a public health issue–leading to sick pets\, beach closures\, and posing immediate health risks to anyone who recreates in or consumes the water. Until now\, there have been limited\, cost-effective ways to reduce bacteria levels in stormwater. Biochar in stormwater filter media could provide safer\, cleaner recreational waters for humans\, pets\, and wildlife. During this presentation\, Stantec will discuss the biochar- and iron-enhanced sand filters (BIESF) Large-scale Demonstration Projects. These BIESFs are the largest known stormwater treatment systems designed to remove bacteria from urban runoff with far-reaching implications for the industry. Key takeaways to be presented include biochar- and iron-enhanced sand filter design considerations and specifications\, site constraints and challenges\, preliminary performance results\, and lessons learned along the way. \nInfo here.
