SUMMARY:Habitat restoration and bird monitoring on the Oneida Nation reservation
DESCRIPTION:Since the early 2000s\, the Oneida Nation has restored nearly 3\,000 acres of agricultural lands to native wetland\, grassland\, prairie\, and forest\, providing important habitat for wildlife and helping to reduce watershed runoff. To evaluate restoration success at three critical sites with respect to bird life\, the Oneida Nation partnered with the Northeastern Wisconsin (NEW) Audubon Society\, Audubon Great Lakes\, and UW-Green Bay to launch a bird monitoring program. The deep\, collaborative partnership involves nearly 30 volunteers who conducted ~300 standardized bird surveys\, the data from which not only provide general information about the birds that use these sites but also guide preliminary land management decisions (e.g.\, water level manipulation\, prescribed burns) to the restored lands. This partnership also serves as an opportunity for the bird monitors to learn about the Oneida Nation’s rich culture\, history\, and language\, particularly in the context of the natural world. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: One Good Idea
DESCRIPTION:One Good Idea is a new online platform and campaign to help farmers get started and have success with soil health and regenerative practices. Created by a multi-state team of university Extension professionals and farmers\, One Good Idea was designed to facilitate farmer-to-farmer learning about practices that can improve soil\, land\, and bottom lines\, such as cover crops\, conservation tillage\, rotational grazing\, and nutrient management. \nThe platform is for farmers\, but it can also support the work of professionals who work with farmers to implement conservation practices\, such as Extension agents\, farm advisors\, and conservation professionals. \nThis Lunch & Learn is an opportunity for such professionals to learn the “science” behind One Good Idea and how it can support their work. We’ll also cover how you could collaborate with farmers to contribute to the platform and the movement to facilitate farmer-to-farmer learning about conservation and regenerative practices. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Economics of Soil Health: Contributions of Reduced Tillage and Cover Cropping
DESCRIPTION:Weighing the costs and benefits of soil health management practices is a primary concern for producers considering the adoption of such practices. However\, the economic information needed for making data-driven\, science-based decisions is difficult to find. Recognizing that cropping and operating systems\, climate\, and soils vary\, the Soil Health Institute has done extensive research to develop partial budgets to fill the knowledge gap on the economics of soil health systems. Using data from more than 100 corn and soybean production partial budgets from across the United States\, this webinar will provide an in-depth analysis of how cover cropping affects expenditures and management practices in reduced tillage systems. It will also discuss details on cover crop seed mixes\, planting\, and termination strategies. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Wisconsin Cranberry School
DESCRIPTION:The Wisconsin State Cranberry Growers Association (WSCGA) Board agreed Tuesday\, January 5 to move their annual Winter Meeting from an in-person format to a virtual one. The event is held in conjunction with the annual Cranberry School put on by the Wisconsin Cranberry Research and Education Foundation (WCREF). The 2022 Cranberry School will also be moved to a virtual format. \nThe decision was made by the WSCGA Board due to concern over the health and safety of the cranberry community\, speakers\, and Cranberry School attendees in light of the COVID-19 global pandemic’s current trajectory. \nWSCGA President Steven Bartling said\, “This decision wasn’t easy as we were all looking forward to a gathering of our community. The reasons for this decision were simple. We have an increase in health concerns from COVID spread increasing within our communities currently and broad hesitation from our growers\, venders\, and presenters to join a big gathering.” \nThe events were originally planned to take place January 19 and 20 at the Wilderness Resort in Lake Delton and will now take place on the same dates virtually. \nThe following adjustments were made to the event to fit the new virtual format: \n\nRegistration fees for the School will be reduced to $50 per person for members\, $75 for nonmembers. Registration remains open at https://wcref.regfox.com/wisconsin-cranberry-school\nMinor adjustments to the agenda to provide participants with a little more break time during the school.\nThe Winter Trade Show was cancelled\nThe Pesticide Applicator Training session at the Wilderness Resort is cancelled\, growers in need of certification are encouraged to seek a session in their growing region\n\nWSCGA Executive Director Tom Lochner added\, “We are disappointed to cancel the in-person portion of these events\, however the decision was made out of an abundance of caution. We remain committed to providing a valuable experience to Wisconsin’s grower community and are optimistic the new virtual format will expand access to growers who are geographically isolated or who were hesitant about attending the event in-person.”

SUMMARY:Public Rights in Milwaukee’s Fresh Coast
DESCRIPTION:A lunchtime virtual event where we will explore the past\, present\, and future of Milwaukee’s Fresh Coast. Much of the city’s coastline and riverfronts are not original — they were built on lakebed or riverbed that was filled to create new land. Join us as we learn from six of the leading minds in this field about what the public trust doctrine is\, what is public enough to satisfy the public trust doctrine\, whether the state and other developers can exclude the public on these newly created lands and what the permissible uses are on the newly created land. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:The History and Effectiveness of Injurious Wildlife Listing under the “Lacey Act”
DESCRIPTION:As part of the original Federal law known as the “Lacey Act” passed in 1900\, injurious wildlife has been amended several times\, but the purpose has always been to protect the United States from the introduction of invasive and otherwise harmful wildlife. Congress first gave the authority for overseeing injurious wildlife to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and later to the Department of the Interior. Injurious listing prohibits the importation of wild vertebrates\, crustaceans\, and mollusks that can cause harm to wildlife resources\, humans\, and other U.S. interests. However\, most people know about a different provision of the “Lacey Act\,” which is about trafficking of wildlife and plants. This presentation will explain what the “Lacey Act” is and the difference between the injurious and trafficking provisions. It will emphasize how the Service focuses on adding high-risk species to the Federal injurious list before they become established and how effective that has been in preventing the establishment of those injurious animals. \nInfo here.
