SUMMARY:Underground Wonders: The Importance of Caves and Karst in Bat Conservation
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, bat experts and advocates will take the audience deep into some of these other-worldly landscapes and discuss why caves and karst formations must be protected. The panel will highlight the most pressing threats that bats face and explain how anyone can help make a bat-friendly community\, above and below the ground\, during this year’s Bat Week (October 24-31) and beyond. \nWhat you’ll learn: \n\nWhy wildlife\, including bats\, depend on subterranean habitats for survival\, and how cave ecosystems benefit humans (such as providing water)\nHow to protect bat caves and how to enhance bat habitat above the ground\, whether in a backyard\, corporate landscape or community park\n\nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Practical Tools for a Climate-Resilient Farm: Cover Crops\, Biochar\, and On-Farm Water Management
DESCRIPTION:Barr Farms has raised livestock and Certified Organic mixed vegetables on a fragipan (shallow soil) in the Ohio River Valley for 13 years. In response to increasing climate challenges – heavy rain events\, high humidity all year\, wetter than normal summers\, and the possibility of droughts in the fall – Adam and Rae have implemented several mitigating systems. \nLearn about their use of rye grass and cover crops\, biochar\, drainage and other adaptations to increase farm resiliency. Join in a discussion of the pros and cons of various strategies for farming successfully in a changing climate. Q&A with Adam and Rae will follow the live presentation. \nDetails here.

SUMMARY:The Perennial Turn
DESCRIPTION:Join the Climate Change Coalition of Door County for a stimulating exploration of new approaches to agriculture and the cultural and economic systems underlying it. The focus will be on perennial grains\, which don’t need to be replanted every year and don’t require destructive monocultures. \nThe program will feature four leaders in this field — Matthew Burke\, Marianne Patinelli-Dubay\, Kathleen Smythe and Bill Vitek — collaborators with others in writing The Perennial Turn: Contemporary Essays from the Field. This book focuses on natural systems and our integration with them\, beginning with agriculture. The speakers will discuss their work and the educational and agricultural initiatives of The Land Institute in Salina\, Kansas\, a global leader in developing and promoting perennial grains. The presentation will last about 45 minutes leaving time for Q & A\, through the chat function on Zoom. \nDetails here.

SUMMARY:Tomorrow’s World: Future forests\, timber supply\, and the bioeconomy
DESCRIPTION:A part of the Yale Forest Forum: The Future of Wood Building Products in a Changing Climate \nWood is a renewable resource that has wide material applications in many industries. Wood products sourced from sustainably managed forests store carbon and can play an important role in combating climate change. Recent innovations in the use of wood have led to the development of new products that can replace traditional fossil-based carbon-intensive materials\, particularly in the construction and energy sectors. Understanding the potential environmental impacts and societal implications of increases in both conventional and emerging wood products across their respective life cycles\, as well as their possible reuse in a circular construction economy\, is critical in assessing the climate mitigation potential of wood vs. other materials. \nWhat is the future role of forest products in addressing climate\, resources\, societal\, and environmental challenges? What are the environmental\, economic\, and societal implications for using more forest products? Hear from speakers representing forestry\, industrial ecology\, architecture\, conservation\, and academia. \nDetails here.

SUMMARY:Soil Testing and Nutrient Removal Trends
DESCRIPTION:An inventory of soil-test levels across North America is published by The Fertilizer Institute (formerly the International Plant Nutrition Institute) every five years\, and a new inventory is due out this year from data collected in 2020. The inventory of soil-test levels\, nutrient removals\, and nutrient balances is useful for evaluating trends over time and alerting managers and crop advisers on emerging issues. From the inventory\, it is clear that various areas across North America exhibit a majority of samples testing below optimum for phosphorus and potassium. This presentation will examine trends over the past couple decades and discuss what those trends might indicate for nutrient management. \nDetails here.

SUMMARY:The Business and Ecosystem Value of Biodiversity
DESCRIPTION:Protecting biodiversity is a defining issue of our time as we face the prospect of mass extinction and ecosystem collapse. In this webinar\, Quantis and partners will discuss what biodiversity means from a business perspective\, how biodiversity concerns can be integrated into existing sustainability strategies\, and how this focus can align with current company-wide goals. The speakers will discuss why biodiversity is critical for resilience\, strategies for engaging key stakeholders to come along\, and how to integrate biodiversity commitments into existing frameworks such as science-based targets. In this webcast you will learn: \n\nThe main barriers and pressures involved in implementing a biodiversity strategy for your business\nWhy it makes business sense to focus on ecosystem services and biodiversity protection\nHow to get started with biodiversity using EqoSystem Analytics: The Quantis Biodiversity Methodology\nThe challenges and opportunities involved with focusing on biodiversity strategies (based on case study examples)\n\nDetails here.

NRCS staff will join us\, and talk about how NRCS programs have benefitted Mariann’s farm. Connect with women farmer and landowners\, and learn and see how soil regenerates through pasture rotation and renewal. Examples of interseeding to increase biomass through the NRCS CSP program\, and tree harvest to improve woodlands\, also supported through NRCS. \nDetails here.

SUMMARY:Valuing Aquatic Ecosystem Health at a National Scale: Modeling Biological Indicators Across Space and Time
DESCRIPTION:EPA estimates the benefits of preserving aquatic resources using the water quality index (WQI). The WQI focuses on metrics related to human use\, such as recreation\, but fails to fully capture aspects important to nonuse values of aquatic ecosystems\, such as existence values. Stated preference surveys can quantify the nonuse values of streams and lakes but require an appropriate index of biological health to be able to measure and compare biological condition. \nIn a recent effort\, EPA researchers identified an appropriate biological health index to be applied in a forthcoming national stated preference survey that will estimate nonuse values of streams and lakes throughout the conterminous United States (CONUS). Through a literature review and focus groups\, researchers compared two aquatic indices that are regularly used to quantify biological health by EPA’s National Aquatic Resources Surveys: 1) multimetric indices (MMIs) and 2) the observed-to-expected ratio of taxonomic composition (O/E). This webinar will discuss this comparison\, implications for estimating benefits of preserving aquatic resources\, and forthcoming work to link O/E with water quality and habitat models\, which would forecast changes in O/E resulting from future regulatory action. \nDetails here.
