SUMMARY:Do the Numbers: Organic Dairy
DESCRIPTION:Thelma Heidel-Baker and Ricky Baker have a small\, family-run\, diversified organic dairy farm in the rolling hills of southeastern Wisconsin. For this field day\, they’ll share how they manage their grass-based\, organic dairy. They’ll cover: \n\n\n\nPasture management\nConservation practices\nPollinator habitat\nLivestock health\nSome of the financials to think about when running a grass-based dairy farm\n\n\n\nIn addition\, Jon Winsten\, an ag-economist with Winrock International and The Pasture Project\, will talk about the economics of grazing. Jon is working on a project examining Upper Midwest dairy farm financial case studies-from confinement to pasture-based operations. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Aquatic Plant ID Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In place of the usual hands-on summer aquatic plant identification workshops\, we are holding one virtual webinar this year. We will be covering a similar set of species as we would at the hands-on workshops\, and the day will include rotations with multiple staff covering different groups of plants. There will be time for Q&A after each group of species\, and a longer Q&A session at the end. We realize it won’t be the same as the hands-on sessions with live plants and field ID practice\, but we hope this is a valuable alternative to prepare those of you that will be doing point-intercept surveys or other aquatic plant work this season. This webinar will also be recorded for later viewing. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Conservation Drainage - Managing Water for the Future
DESCRIPTION:Join the North Central Climate Collaborative for their next webinar Conservation Drainage – Managing Water for the Future featuring John McMaine. \nTile drainage is widespread throughout the Midwest.  As weather patterns continue to shift toward more precipitation outside of the growing season and less precipitation during the growing season\, water management will need to continue to adapt to provide resilience. Conservation drainage is a concept that incorporates methods of storing water or treating water in the landscape or edge-of-field to increase resilience and improve water quality while maintaining the agronomic benefits of tile drainage.  This webinar will cover some of the recent research in conservation drainage\, how they can be incorporated into new and existing practices\, and what the future of conservation drainage might look like. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Wetland Soils 101: Way More Than Just Mud on Your Boots
DESCRIPTION:If you’re involved with wetland management\, restoration\, or mitigation at any scale\, you need to understand how soil properties influence wetlands. Soils affect water availability\, water transport\, vegetation communities\, and so much more. Join wetland ecologist Drew Fowler to hear about the unique and diverse properties of wetland soils as well as how different soils facilitate surface and groundwater flows. You’ll learn the questions you need to ask of the soils in the wetlands you care for and work with so you can be an effective manager\, whether you’re a landowner\, consultant\, or land manager. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Working with Neighbors to Integrate Livestock and Improve Soil
DESCRIPTION:Tom’s goal is to improve the soil on his family’s century farm. To do this\, he has been working with neighbors Jim Funke\, Jon Merrill\, and Conner Allender to integrate cattle\, sheep\, and poultry into his cropping system in a variety of ways. They’ve been practicing management-intensive grazing for four years on selected areas.  We’ll see areas where unrolled hay bales were fed prior to cash crop planting and where stockpiled grazing took place. We’ll also see how chickens follow cows\, along with pictures showing where soils that were once poor have become productive again. Not only is Tom seeing life come back to the soil and farm\, he is building community in rural Iowa in the process. \nLearn more and register here.

SUMMARY:Principles of Riverscape Health & Low-Tech Process-Based Restoration
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar we will immerse you deeper into reading riverscapes; specifically\, we will introduce the principles of riverscape health. These principles will be cast in a light to help you better recognize impairments\, articulate the scope of what’s been lost\, and realistically target recovery potential. Then we will introduce low-tech process-based restoration (PBR) as a means of addressing structural starvation so pervasive among many riverscapes today. We will briefly highlight six principles of low-tech PBR\, which help guide restoration planning\, design and implementation and more critically place our actions as ecological restoration practitioners in context. While we will focus on examples of these principles in practice for riverine and riparian ecosystmes\, the mechanistic and functional focus has merit in crossover to restoration of other ecosystems as well. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Drought Decision-Making Tools You Can Use
DESCRIPTION:Learn about two toolkits that support drought monitoring and drought decision-making across the lower 48 states: the Integrated Water Portal and The Climate Toolbox. The Integrated Water Portal brings together water data from several different agencies into a map-driven data exploration and visualization tool that is designed to support drought monitoring at state and basin scales. This site allows users to quickly explore regional and local water conditions with a focus on surface and near-surface supplies. The Climate Toolbox is a set of mapping/graphing tools that can be used to explore climate/hydrology data in real-time with comparisons to the past and insight into the future (sub-seasonal to seasonal forecasts and future projections) at gridded locations. The presentation will also feature users’ perspectives\, including how the State of Washington’s Drought Coordinator uses The Climate Toolbox for state drought monitoring \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Small-Scale No-Till Vegetables
DESCRIPTION:Reducing tillage is one of the best ways to improve soil health on your farm. However\, a lot of no-till practices are specific to large-scale row crops and are hard to implement on diversified vegetable farms. In recent years\, the practice of reducing tillage on small-scale vegetable farms has been gaining momentum. Join the Land Stewardship Project for an online presentation and conversation with Les Macare and Els Dobrick of Racing Heart Farm as they share their experiences with implementing no-till practices on their farm in western Wisconsin to increase soil health and efficiency.  RSVP to Annelie Livingston-Anderson at annelie@landstewardshipproject.org

SUMMARY:Live Roller-Crimper and Weed Zapper Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:The Iowa State University Extension\, Outreach Organic Ag Program\, and PFI is planning a virtual field day to demonstrate rolling rye in an organic no-till system at the Levi Lyle Farm in Keota\, Iowa\, weather-permitting. Lyle expects the rye to be past anthesis at that date\, which is necessary for proper termination of the rye crop where soybeans will be planted. To learn more email info@practicalfarmers.org
