SUMMARY:Thinking Through Cover Crops: How to Set Goals\, Design Optimal Seed Mixes and Minimize Costs
DESCRIPTION:Cover crop mixes can help farmers add diversity or achieve specific on-farm goals like cover crop grazing\, weed control or improved soil fertility. But if these mixes are created without identified cover crop goals in mind\, mixes with many species can simply feel like an additional expense without clear benefit. This farminar will discuss how to tailor your summer or fall cover crop mix and match your on-farm goals while keeping costs in check. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Milk Quality and Production: Opportunities and Threats
DESCRIPTION:Laura – In a study completed by her research group they aimed to determine if increased cisternal milk impacted milk yield. Given that in traditional milking systems\, take offs are set according to the fastest milking quarters. Are there possible negative effects on quarters that are not completely milked out? \nDon Sockett – As part of the University of Wisconsin\, in cooperation with the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Agriculture\, Trade and Consumer Protection\, the UW Madison Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory participates in research\, consultation and education to meet the needs of many. Dr. Don Sockett will give an update on the work being done in the lab and challenges he sees emerging in the dairy industry. One of the topics he will present on is the emerging threat of Prototheca Bovis Mastitis. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Certified Crop Adviser and Farmer Perspectives on Pesticide Resistance Management: A Social Approach
DESCRIPTION:Past research has indicated growing farmer awareness of pesticide resistance issues. However\, proactive management is often stymied by misplaced optimism in a miracle pesticide and feelings of fatalism. Yet farmers clearly do not make decisions alone\, as their in-field advisers can have considerable positive impact on their knowledge\, perspectives\, and decisions. This webinar will discuss the results of a nationwide survey of Certified Crop Advisers (CCAs) on the topic of pesticide resistance. Farmer and CCA perspectives on the issue will be compared and an outline of common approaches and barriers to productive advising will be presented. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Community Food Webs Learning Circle: Building Market Power for Farmers
DESCRIPTION:Building strong community food networks where we live can move us powerfully toward our vision for functioning local and regional systems that support regenerative farming and provide all people with the nourishing foods they want and need. To explore how communities around the country are making this happen\, in March LSP is hosting three learning circles focused on the book Building Community Food Webs\, by Ken Meter. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Biochar for stormwater management: Challenges in translating success from the laboratory to the field
DESCRIPTION:Biochar is a charcoal-like substance produced by the thermal decomposition of biomass. Long utilized as a soil amendment for its moisture retention properties and stable carbon content\, biochar has recently gained substantial attention as a novel stormwater filter material. Numerous studies have demonstrated the utility of biochar to treat a broad array of contaminants; including nitrogen\, phosphorus\, heavy metals\, pathogens\, organic carbon\, and organic contaminants. While the literature demonstrates a striking understanding and ability to control and tune these removal processes at the laboratory scale\, application at the field scale has resulted in challenges and mixed success. What is getting lost in translation? \n\n\nThis seminar will provide an overview the utility of biochar as a media amendment for enhancing contaminant removal in stormwater filtration systems. Two case studies spanning from laboratory-scale testing to mesocosm- or demonstration-scale performance evaluation will presented\, which resulted in mixed success. These case studies demonstrate that biochar selection is a critical component of the design process\, and warrant additional work to specify biochar properties that can indicate performance according to application-specific requirements. The seminar will conclude with a summary of lessons learned and best-practice recommendations for future applications. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Moving Manure and Mortalities after Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza
DESCRIPTION:Between January 2022 and February 2023\, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has affected 58.4 million birds. This includes 316 commercial flocks\, 446 backyard flocks\, and wild birds spread across most US states. HPAI is a devastating virus that harms birds but also restricts the movement of other materials on and off commercial poultry farms. Protecting commercial poultry farms requires a multifaceted response by farms\, government\, and industry partners. When a flock is confirmed positive with HPAI\, there are layers of oversight from multiple agencies at national\, state and sometimes even regional levels. This webinar will share research and guidance on minimizing the risk of virus movement through manure and mortality management. This webinar will also explain the roles technical advisors can play in response to an outbreak. \nAn application for continuing education credit for Certified Crop Advisors (CCAs) and members of the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists (ARPAS) will be submitted. \nInfo here. \n
