SUMMARY:Webinar: The Use of Cover Crops in No-Till Organic Production in the US Midwest—A Case Study with Dry Beans in Iowa
DESCRIPTION:Farmer’s reliance on frequent tillage for effective weed control remains a major concern for organic grain production. Conventional tillage practices severely disrupt soil structure\, reduce soil organic matter\, and increase soil erosion. In this webinar\, Dr. Contina will discuss the benefits of using cover crops in organic no-till production as well as the challenges and opportunities for farmers and the public in general. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Thinking Through Cover Crops: How to Set Goals\, Design Optimal Seed Mixes and Minimize Costs
DESCRIPTION:Cover crop mixes can help farmers add diversity or achieve specific on-farm goals like cover crop grazing\, weed control or improved soil fertility. But if these mixes are created without identified cover crop goals in mind\, mixes with many species can simply feel like an additional expense without clear benefit. This farminar will discuss how to tailor your summer or fall cover crop mix and match your on-farm goals while keeping costs in check. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Milk Quality and Production: Opportunities and Threats
DESCRIPTION:Laura – In a study completed by her research group they aimed to determine if increased cisternal milk impacted milk yield. Given that in traditional milking systems\, take offs are set according to the fastest milking quarters. Are there possible negative effects on quarters that are not completely milked out? \nDon Sockett – As part of the University of Wisconsin\, in cooperation with the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Agriculture\, Trade and Consumer Protection\, the UW Madison Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory participates in research\, consultation and education to meet the needs of many. Dr. Don Sockett will give an update on the work being done in the lab and challenges he sees emerging in the dairy industry. One of the topics he will present on is the emerging threat of Prototheca Bovis Mastitis. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Ag Water Quality Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:The UW-Madison Division of Extension’s Agriculture Water Quality Program is hosting a biweekly webinar series in early 2023 on important factors impacting ground and surface water quality. The winter webinar series is supported by Wisconsin Farmers Union. Each webinar will be an hour\, starting at 11:00am\, and will have one continuing education credit for certified crop advisors. Registration is free but required.
