SUMMARY:Conservation Innovation Grants: Water Quality
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will feature two successful water quality projects supported by the Conservation Innovation Grants (CIG) program. The CIG program was established to stimulate the development and adoption of innovative conservation approaches and technologies for U.S. producers on farms\, ranches\, and forest land. CIG projects lead to the transfer of conservation technologies\, management systems\, and innovative approaches to agriculture producers and the private sector. In addition\, the projects often help NRCS with updating or changing manuals and guides\, and modernizing conservation standards. In general\, the program will fund pilot projects\, demonstrations\, and research. Presenters will describe their projects\, the lessons learned about the various technologies demonstrated\, and provide suggestions for how NRCS can use the information learned to assist livestock producers with water quality issues. \nFind more information here.

SUMMARY:Phenological Whiplash in Lakes
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is leading to overall warming and increasing variability across many ecosystems. In northern lakes\, extremely early or late lake ice melt has cascading effects throughout the food web. This webinar will discuss how the increasing unpredictability of seasonal environmental cues in lakes will lead to mistimed ecological interactions and evolutionary selection pressures that may reduce the response diversity of ecosystems. Managing for diversity will become paramount for developing resilient aquatic ecosystems. From genes to ecosystems\, the impacts of climate change–and the accompanying abrupt changes to eco-evolutionary dynamics that may arise–should be viewed through the lens of climate variability as well as average long-term warming. \nFind out more here.

SUMMARY:Using the NRCS Solid-Liquid Separation Handbook
DESCRIPTION:NRCS developed a new technical document entitled “Solid-Liquid Separation Alternatives for Manure Handling and Treatment.” This document brings together both the theory behind solid-liquid separation and the practical application of many different separation technologies. Several farm-scale demonstration projects are also summarized in the report. Solid-liquid separation can serve to achieve many livestock operational objectives such as nutrient partitioning\, improved pumping characteristics\, solids removal from storage facilities\, and reduced organic loadings. The use of separation technologies is essential for many operations and has become an integral part of the efficient performance of these livestock facilities. Some of the purposes and uses of this document include assisting in solid-liquid separation technology selection\, evaluating separation performance\, and quantifying the impact of solid-liquid separation on manure management. The document also includes information on the uses and benefits of coagulants and flocculants and separation methods associated with sand-laden manure. \nLearn more here.

SUMMARY:Measures of Soil Nitrogen Cycling
DESCRIPTION:Measuring and assessing soil health are critical for understanding how changes in agronomic management practices affect the capability of soil to support cropping systems. In this presentation\, the Soil Health Institute will focus on explaining measurements and assessments of soil health associated with soil-nitrogen dynamics. Soil scientists have been working to estimate rates of nitrogen mineralization for use in soil fertility recommendations for generations. The Soil Health Institute has investigated various means of measuring the microbially mediated process of nitrogen cycling and will discuss: soil organic carbon and nitrogen\, potentially mineralizable nitrogen\, microbial respiration\, inorganic and organic nitrogen extractions\, N-Acetyl-β-D-Glucosaminidase (NAG enzyme)\, and autoclaved-citrate extractable soil protein (ACE protein). For each measurement\, the method or methods will be described and the meaning of the measurement will be discussed\, especially as it pertains to on-farm advisers and farmers. Insights and examples from the North American Project to Evaluate Soil Health Measurements will be shared to provide contextual understanding of each measurement.\n\nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Leaps and Bounds - How to Jump Over the Barriers to Preventing the Spread of Invasive Species
DESCRIPTION:In 2018 the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources hired the consulting team of Azentive and Beyond Attitude Consulting to evaluate Aquatic Invasive Species(AIS) pathways. The work included identifying human behaviors that could reduce the spread of AIS through those pathways. An extensive literature review was conducted\, and an expert panel was convened to identify and rank behaviors that could reduce the risks of AIS spread by people. Through targeted surveys and engagement with stakeholders\, the factors that are important to a successful program to change behaviors in Minnesota were identified. The factors include existing attitudes and awareness about the risk of invasive species\, the likelihood of adoption of preventive behaviors\, barriers that may prevent some people from taking action\, and what might motivate them to take those actions. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Seedling Genetics and Soil Fertility - Know What You are Planting and How to Car for It
DESCRIPTION:During each rotation of a planted forest\, landowners have a single opportunity to choose the appropriate genetics for their long-term investment. We encourage forest landowners to plant the best genetic quality seedlings possible. The benefits from establishing highly productive families\, in combination with good silvicultural practices\, will result in large financial returns. Nurseries grow loblolly pine seedlings that have a range in genetic quality. Information about the value of different seedling families can be sourced from seedling vendors as well as from tree improvement cooperatives. The cooperative provides a “third-party” assessment of the productivity\, disease resistance\, and stem quality of the many families that are available for purchase. \nLearn more here.

Most critical are its wide variety of wetland\, riverine\, and upland plant-animal communities\, which are joined by intact natural ecotones into a large and functioning ecosystem. Take a virtual tour of the Lower Wisconsin Riverway with ecologist Mike Mossman\, who will share the important ecological and cultural features of the riverway and how they warranted its designation as a Wetland of International Importance. Mike will also discuss some of the threats facing the river and will certainly share some of his river stories. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Enhancing Investment in Soil Health and Carbon Storage: Frontiers for Linking Finance and Carbon Accounting
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this web seminar is to support investment-oriented actions promoting soil health and carbon storage by improving the accounting of soil carbon sequestration. We seek to answer the question: How can soil carbon accounting improve to support investment-oriented actions promoting soil health and carbon storage? To this end\, participants will examine opportunities for action using novel methods and frontier technologies that enable linking technical practices with finance and policy for accurate and cost-efficient SOC accounting. The workshop will also examine how improved SOC accounting can support three priority lines for action (Vermeulen\, et al. 2019): policy\, business development\, and value for farmers to promote scaling up of investment in soil health and carbon storage. The key output of the meeting will be a summary of the state of the art of the component methodologies or a combination thereof\, and what is needed next to make these most useable for investors to account for SOC sequestration.\nLearn more here.

SUMMARY:Can a Landowner Make Money Raising Grassfed Beef?
DESCRIPTION:This webinar’s presenter is Jim Munsch who was contracted by Trout Unlimited.  Land use decisions significantly affect soil loss and runoff. The effect is pronounced in the three-state Driftless Area.  Managed grazing and long-term ground cover are strong mitigators of erosion\, but can those land use decisions have positive financial outcomes? Both of these practices are integral to the raising of grassfed beef. We studied the financial outcomes for a dozen farms in the Driftless Area who are raising grassfed beef with the goal of answering that question. This webinar will show the results of that study\, point to “best practices” used by these producers\, and point to methods that will help a wider group of cattle enterprises. \nRegister by noon on September 7.
