SUMMARY:Growing Through Change - Sourcing Climate Resilient Seed for Ecologic Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Despite being The Prairie State the Illinois and neighboring states’ prairies have been heavily converted due to human use\, and many of those that remain are degraded. Research in the relatively new discipline of restoration ecology provides insights that practitioners use to restore diversity\, function and resilience to these landscapes influenced by anthropogenic change. A critical function of many restoration projects is the promotion of a diverse plant community\, which frequently requires the introduction of plant material such as seeds and plugs. The availability of appropriate material\, in terms of species\, origins and quantity\, is a limiting factor. Climate change further complicates the matter as land managers try to locate seed to best match future conditions in an effort to increase the resilience of managed sites. Land managers are aware of the complexity of the issue\, but the current literature is extensive and often inaccessible. A general review and synthesis of the current state of the science would bring needed guidance to practitioners and inform seed suppliers and researchers about gaps in native plant materials supply and research. \nFor more information\, follow this link. \n

SUMMARY:Weed Management When Establishing Pollinator Plantings
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Mark Renz to learn more about weed management for greater success of your pollinator plantings! He will share his research about the impact of cover crops\, herbicides and mowing on establishing native plants for pollinators. Results from over 30 pollinator plantings in Wisconsin will provide insight as to what factors you should consider when planning a pollinator planting. \nPresented by Mark Renz (PhD)\, professor and weed specialist with the University of Wisconsin-Madison. With over 20 years of experience with management of invasive plants\, Dr. Renz provides technical information and educational opportunities for agency staff\, consultants\, companies\, and citizens concerned about invasive plants. He also is the president of the Midwest invasive Plant Network whose mission is to reduce the impact of invasive plants in the Midwestern United States.

SUMMARY:Sharing Climate Science: Lessons Learned from a Climate Change Communicator
DESCRIPTION:It’s a complex world\, and the need for clear communication has never been greater. This learning series provides opportunities to build your science communication skills and reflect on how to tell meaningful stories about your work. Hosted by the Lake Superior Reserve’s Coastal Training Program and the Lake Superior Collaborative\, this series is designed to help you gain confidence in your communication skills whether you are a scientific researcher\, government employee\, or in any line of work related to science or Lake Superior coastal management. This series will alternate between virtual workshops and webinars from January through May of 2021. \nThis session will focus on communicating how a changing climate affects conservation and management goals sometimes feels like a complex and difficult challenge to overcome\, but with some practice and a few tips and tricks\, everyone can take steps to effectively engage partners and stakeholders on this topic. In this presentation\, Danielle Shannon from the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science will share a basic recipe for creating meaningful messages and communications related to climate change\, land management\, and conservation practices in Northern Wisconsin. Attendees will learn how to make clear connections between the places we care about and the many potential climate related risks and impacts.

SUMMARY:Conservation Considerations for Resiliency in a Changing Climate
DESCRIPTION:In agricultural watersheds\, shifting climate patterns present an immediate and localized risk to both farm productivity and downstream aquatic ecosystems. During this webinar\, Dr. Mark Williams of USDA’s Agricultural Research Service will present research exploring long-term trends in rainfall amount\, intensity and timing within the Maumee River-Western Lake Erie Basin.  The research findings indicate that increasing rainfall amount and intensity\, combined with increasing hydrologic connectivity and accumulating nutrient stores in the Maumee watershed over the past four decades\, create significant challenges for contemporary approaches to dissolved phosphorus load mitigation. \nNo registration is required. Access the webinar shortly before 3:00 pm ET at https://nrcs.adobeconnect.com/ceap2/ \nQuestions? Contact Liz Marshall at elizabeth.marshall@usda.gov

SUMMARY:Wetlands as Solutions to our Water Issues in Wisconsin
DESCRIPTION:Learn about what wetlands are\, why they’re important\, their current state\, and what you can do to care for these natural treasures. Historically viewed as wastelands\, wetland loss was rampant in Wisconsin for many decades. The legacy of wetland loss has contributed to many of our current natural resource and societal problems such as increased flooding\, decreased water quality\, and loss of fish and wildlife habitat. Tracy Hames will present wetlands from a new perspective\, showing how we can use them as solutions to the water-related issues we face\, especially flooding. \nFollow this link to learn more.

SUMMARY:Solarization and Biosolarization: Harnessing the Sun and Organic Matter to Control Weeds
DESCRIPTION:Biosolarization is a new innovation in the realm of weed control. Different from the commonly known practice of solarization\, which uses clear plastic sheeting on moist soil to thermally terminate a variety of pest species\, biosolarization includes the use of organic matter in the form of compost\, cover crops\, manure or other materials such as pomace or nut hulls. The addition of organic matter can accelerate the process by encouraging anaerobic soil disinfestation. The carbon from organic material produces chemicals with bio-pesticidal activity. The combination of these natural chemicals and heat acts like a fumigant and eliminates soil-borne pests and weed species. \nThis presentation will cover theoretical concepts as well as results from field trials. \nInformation and registration here.
