SUMMARY:Restoration for whom\, by whom? Exploring the socio-political dimensions of restoration
DESCRIPTION:As the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration launches into action\, urgent attention is needed to the power and politics that shape the values\, meanings\, and science driving restoration\, to enable the creation of equitable restoration initiatives. In this webinar\, we adopt a feminist political ecology lens\, with a focus on gendered power relations\, historical awareness\, and scale integration\, to examine the socio-political and economic dynamics of restoration. We demonstrate the potential of such a perspective for thinking about the social inclusivity of restoration agendas and initiatives\, and demonstrate its applicability to different restoration contexts. \nWe bring this perspective to life through three case studies published in a special issue of Ecological Restoration that asks: “Restoration for Whom\, by Whom?”. The first case\, based in Kenya\, shows how attention to power relations is needed to create more equitable Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) schemes. The second\, which focuses on the restoration of an urban lake in Bengaluru\, India\, demonstrates the importance of taking a historical perspective to understand equity considerations in restoration. The last shows the importance of conducting multi-scalar analyses to promote inclusion in and through restoration\, using wetlands restoration as an example. DESCRIPTION:This free webinar will explore some of the different ways the small farms community can develop greater resilience by adopting agroforestry practices. Agroforestry describes a wide range of land-use practices that combine farming (of plants\, animals\, fungi) with trees\, shrubs and forest ecosystems. Agroforestry can help provide new opportunities to increase farm income while also receiving other environmental and social benefits. \nThis workshop will give a broad overview of agroforestry with special attention focusing on forest farming and silvopasture. Forest farming is the cultivation of high-value\, non-timber forest products under the protection of a forest canopy. SUMMARY:USGS and USFWS collaborative project to conduct a national horizon scan for organisms in trade
DESCRIPTION:Invasive species are one of the greatest threats to the United States (U.S.) biodiversity and have cost the U.S. over $120 billion in damages each year (Pimental et al. 2005). The impacts of invasive species range in size and scope from small-scale and localized up to broad shifts in ecosystem function and can influence economically essential species and those of conservation concern alike. The consequences of an invasion include not only degradation of the natural ecosystem but also economic repercussions and effects on human and wildlife health in the invaded areas. \nThe focus of this project is to conduct a global horizon scan to help identify alien vertebrate species within the Organisms in Trade Pathway at greatest risk of entering the country\, establishing populations\, and becoming invasive in the U.S. Our work will address arrival\, establishment\, and impact via consideration of propagule pressure\, climatic similarity to occupied range\, and prior invasion history of the focal species and its relatives\, respectively. \nInfo here.
