SUMMARY:Using the NRCS Solid-Liquid Separation Handbook
DESCRIPTION:NRCS developed a new technical document entitled “Solid-Liquid Separation Alternatives for Manure Handling and Treatment.” This document brings together both the theory behind solid-liquid separation and the practical application of many different separation technologies. Several farm-scale demonstration projects are also summarized in the report. Solid-liquid separation can serve to achieve many livestock operational objectives such as nutrient partitioning\, improved pumping characteristics\, solids removal from storage facilities\, and reduced organic loadings. The use of separation technologies is essential for many operations and has become an integral part of the efficient performance of these livestock facilities. Some of the purposes and uses of this document include assisting in solid-liquid separation technology selection\, evaluating separation performance\, and quantifying the impact of solid-liquid separation on manure management. The document also includes information on the uses and benefits of coagulants and flocculants and separation methods associated with sand-laden manure. \nLearn more here.

DESCRIPTION:Climate change is leading to overall warming and increasing variability across many ecosystems. In northern lakes\, extremely early or late lake ice melt has cascading effects throughout the food web. This webinar will discuss how the increasing unpredictability of seasonal environmental cues in lakes will lead to mistimed ecological interactions and evolutionary selection pressures that may reduce the response diversity of ecosystems. Managing for diversity will become paramount for developing resilient aquatic ecosystems. DESCRIPTION:This webinar will feature two successful water quality projects supported by the Conservation Innovation Grants (CIG) program. The CIG program was established to stimulate the development and adoption of innovative conservation approaches and technologies for U.S. producers on farms\, ranches\, and forest land. CIG projects lead to the transfer of conservation technologies\, management systems\, and innovative approaches to agriculture producers and the private sector. In addition\, the projects often help NRCS with updating or changing manuals and guides\, and modernizing conservation standards. In general\, the program will fund pilot projects\, demonstrations\, and research. SUMMARY:Manure Application Considerations During Dry Soil Conditions
DESCRIPTION:Maximizing the nutrient availability and retention of applied manure for the upcoming crops begins with proper handling and application to the land. During dry conditions\, it is even more important as those nutrients are especially vulnerable to being flushed from the system during future rain events. Dougherty led a study at the ISU Northeast Research near Nashua to examine the effect of manure application timing and cover crops on yields and drainage water quality. During the virtual event\, Dougherty will share results from that project and similar projects\, as well as provide best management practices for applying manure for the upcoming crop year. “This field day will give producers some tips on planning ahead for fall manure applications. We will discuss some challenges specific to applying manure in very dry conditions as well as the benefits of using manure and cover crops together as an integrated system for improving utilization of manure nutrients\,” noted Dougherty. \nLearn more here.

SUMMARY:The 2017 National Resources Inventory 5-year Release\, 35 Years of National Resources Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:The National Resources Inventory (NRI) program collects and produces scientifically credible information on the status\, condition\, and trends of land\, soil\, water\, and related resources on the Nation’s non-federal lands. The NRI samples points in 49 states (excludes Alaska)\, Puerto Rico\, and the Virgin Islands to assess resource quantity and quality\, creating a longitudinal data set containing variables from 1982\, 1987\, 1992\, 1997\, and annually from 2000 through 2016. This unique data set provides a foundation over time for regular resource appraisals on the effectiveness of soil and water conservation practices\, irrigation techniques\, and farming technologies\, techniques\, and practices. This presentation will provide an overview of the NRI and will include highlights from the 2017 NRI data release (to be released in September 2020) as well as an explanation of the types of data available and how to get access to it. \nRegister here.

Created by the glaciers yet scarred by humans\, this important wetland has been restored by conservationists who had the foresight to think about the future of this wetland. Despite the degradation\, Horicon Marsh was listed as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 1990 and is one of the best of the best wetlands in the world. SUMMARY:Leaf-Free Streets: Reducing Urban Phosphorus
DESCRIPTION:Trees have long been a valued feature of the urban landscape. They provide a host of benefits such as habitat\, aesthetics\, energy savings\, and noise reduction. Trees are also an important part of the urban hydrologic cycle. The functions and value of trees have recently gained attention as viable tools in the management of urban stormwater. Research on the interactions between urban trees and stormwater quantity and quality has revealed a double-edged sword. A community with dense overhead tree canopy may benefit from reduced stormwater runoff volume through interception\, transpiration\, and infiltration but may also suffer from excess nutrients leached to nearby receiving waters from leaf litter. This presentation will highlight ongoing research that will help environmental managers assess how municipal leaf collection and street cleaning programs can limit the amount of phosphorus in stormwater runoff. \nLearn more here.
