SUMMARY:Benefits of Prairie Strips for Beneficial Insects - Pollinators\, Honeybees\, and Natural Predators
DESCRIPTION:Prairie strips are taking root as a new agricultural conservation practice across the Midwest. These strips of native perennial vegetation\, generally 30 feet or more in width\, are placed along the contour within a farm field or at the field edge to retain rainfall and capture soil and nutrient runoff. \nFor farmers and crop advisors reviewing yield data this winter\, a seeding of native perennial grasses and forbs can provide stable cover for underperforming crop acres along field borders or trouble spots. Portions of fields can now be enrolled in the new Prairie Strips CP-43 practice under the Conservation Reserve Program. \nDuring this three-part webinar series\, experienced advisors will discuss strategies for layout\, site preparation\, seeding\, and management of prairie strips to maintain efficient field operations and maximize farm profitability. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:WI DNR Evaluation Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Evaluations are a requirement under s. NR 243. 16 for new permittees\, facilities that haven’t been approved\, or for specific reasons\, e.g. age. When evaluation reports are submitted in a clear and readable format and contains sufficient information\, the review process goes faster and potentially without the need for another evaluation submittal. This benefits all those involved. The purpose of the workshop will discuss: \n· Improvement opportunities in evaluation submittals with consistent report format \n· Evaluating waste storage ponds \n· Evaluating feed storage \n· Evaluating production area runoff controls \n· HydroCAD results \n· Days of storage information expectations \nIf you do not receive a confirmation email when submitting your registration\, please email Penny at Penny@wisconsinlandwater.org \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Organic Grass Fed Dairy: Demographics\, Management\, and Cost of Production
DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, the University of Vermont received an USDA OREI Grant to Advance Grass-Fed Dairy: A Whole Systems Approach to Enhancing Productivity\, Quality\, and Farm Viability in the U.S (OREI 2018-51300-28515). \nOne primary objective was to understand the economic and production metrics for grass-fed dairy systems through implementation of a national survey\, production and economic benchmarking on farms in VT and NY. This session will describe the characteristics and demographics of grass-fed dairy farms from our national survey\, including herd sizes\, acreage\, and management systems. We’ll then take a deeper look at some of the data from our smaller northeast region surveys which include the grass-fed cost of production (cost per cwt) and more detail on farm management and production. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Compliance Matters: NEPA and "Environmental Evaluation" at NRCS
DESCRIPTION:Participants will receive an introduction to NEPA and its relationship to the NRCS Environmental Evaluation (EE). You will learn how the NRCS environmental compliance system operates with the following objectives in mind: \n• Understand the legal foundations for environmental compliance with a focus on NEPA\, the “human environment\,” and demonstrating a “hard look” at the impacts of NRCS actions. \n• Recognize other key environmental laws and understand why they are important. \n• Recognize the regulatory\, policy\, and guidance resources for environmental compliance at NRCS. \n• Understand how the EE/CPA-52 provides the mechanism for documenting NRCS environmental compliance with the laws above. \n• Recognize how the process of documenting our actions in an EE/CPA-52 saves us time and prevents environmental and legal issues. \n• Know the history of the term “Environmental Evaluation” and where it comes from in NRCS regulations \n• Learn how the EE provides local analysis of the impacts of our actions\, identifies and explains the use of an appropriate CE\, or documents the use of the appropriate programmatic NEPA document. \n• Understand the critical support documents for our CEs and our programmatic NEPA: Conservation Practice Standards\, Network Effects Diagrams (NEDs)\, Conservation Practice Physical Effects. \n• Know where to find environmental compliance resources and who to call for help. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Managing your Community’s Floodplains Webinar: Increased Cost of Compliance Coverage (ICC)
DESCRIPTION:ICC coverage provides payment to help cover the cost of mitigation activities that will reduce the risk of future flood damage to a building. When a building covered by a Standard Flood Insurance Policy suffers a flood loss and is declared to be substantially or repetitively damaged\, ICC will pay up to $30\,000 to bring the building into compliance with State or community floodplain management laws or ordinances. Usually this means elevating or relocating the building so that it is above the base flood elevation (BFE). Non-residential structures may also be floodproofed. ICC coverage applies solely to buildings and only covers the cost of the compliance measures undertaken. It is filed separately from the normal flood insurance claim. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Assessing the Toxicity of PFAS Chemicals to Aquatic Organisms
DESCRIPTION:Among the many questions surrounding per- or polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are their potential effects on aquatic communities. While much of the initial research effort has focused on ecological effects of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)\, there is a much wider range of PFAS that can occur in the environment―both as a result of more recently developed compounds and the breakdown products of other PFAS. Effective management of PFAS in aquatic systems requires understanding of the potential effects of a more complete range of PFAS chemicals. \nEPA is working to explore the relationships between PFAS toxicity and chemical structure for several aquatic species to help identify and predict the toxicity of PFAS and PFAS mixtures of greatest ecological concern in support of the development of water quality guidelines. This involves measuring the toxicity of PFAS with varying structural features\, determining variation in sensitivity across species\, and grouping PFAS chemicals by their inferred toxic modes of action (MoA). This webinar will discuss initial findings that sublethal toxicity is strongly related to fluorinated chain length as well as the structure of the non-fluorinated “head” group\, and that differences in toxicity of certain PFAS across structures suggest that multiple PFAS MoAs likely exist. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:High Tunnel Winter Greens Research from Dixon Springs
DESCRIPTION:High tunnel systems allow growers to provide markets with fresh\, locally-grown products for a larger part of the year. During this presentation\, research results will be shared on the utilization of high tunnels to maximize winter vegetable production. This project evaluated different cultural growing techniques\, including planting date\, black plastic mulch and row cover\, for carrots\, lettuce\, spinach\, and kale within a high tunnel at the Dixon Springs Agricultural Center in southern Illinois. Winter production can be a great avenue to diversify farm operations\, increase income opportunities\, and provide more local\, Illinois-grown crops into the marketplace. \nInfo here.
