SUMMARY:Basic Hydrology
DESCRIPTION:This training will cover the basic concept of determining hydrology for common conservation practices. We will review concepts such as runoff\, curve numbers\, peak discharges\, and hydrographs. Students will learn about reading contour maps and delineating watersheds through example problems. By the end of the two sessions students should be able to delineate a watershed as well as be able to obtain the values needed to determine a peak discharge from the delineated watershed using EFH2. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Supporting Mental Health: Northeast WI
DESCRIPTION:As women farmers\, landowners and conservationists\, we wear multiple hats and juggle various responsibilities and commitments\, including a strong vision of increasing stewardship practices on our land. And we all live in a vulnerable space at one time or another – and for one reason or another. How can we as a community best support each other in cultivating strong mental health by consciously caring for each other and identifying when one is in need? \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Outreach and Education for Trash Free Waters – What Makes a Successful Campaign?
DESCRIPTION:When does outreach and education actually change the way people consume products and dispose of their waste? During this webinar\, three expert speakers will discuss how education and outreach campaigns can bring about positive behavior changes that reduce the amount of trash entering waterways. Through presentations and a panel discussion\, speakers will provide examples of innovative source reduction and anti-littering education efforts and share their thoughts on what makes an effective outreach campaign. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:The Impacts of Flooding and Business Activity and Employment: A Spatial Perspective on Small Business
DESCRIPTION:Severe flooding events often cause significant damage to an area\, including affecting the local economy\, disrupting transportation\, and damaging infrastructure. While raw statistics offer some understanding of crop and property-related damages\, resulting from large-scale floods\, we also need to consider the longer-term impacts and recovery within an area and the interaction between adjacent areas during the recovery process. In this paper\, we examine the impacts of major and minor flood events on business employment and the number of establishments in different sectors of the economy. We find that while flood events had a negative short-run impact on agriculture and particularly small farm establishments\, we find positive impacts in the service sector. We also identify significant spatial spillovers. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:How's My Waterway
DESCRIPTION:How’s My Waterway has added several new features over the past year that will be featured in this webcast. Communities use How’s My Waterway to learn about their watershed. When a watershed is shown to have pollution or other issues\, it inspires people to get involved to protect and restore their waterways. By displaying all the information visually\, it gives this data more perspective and transparency which results in the drive for change and innovation. \nHow’s My Waterway answers questions about the health of waters in supporting swimming\, the eating of fish\, drinking water protection and delivery\, the health of aquatic communities\, and the restoration and protection of waterways. The public has access to water information in their community\, state and at a national level. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Cleanout for Lagoons and Anaerobic Digesters
DESCRIPTION:Lagoons and digesters are efficient components to help treat manures and realize an economic revenue. However\, they have to be maintained regularly through cleanout by removing sludge to ensure enough treatment volume is available. Cleanout requires planning to ensure reasonable cost\, structural integrity\, and efficient use of sludge nutrients. In this webinar\, presenters will share their expertise in sampling and cleanout for lagoons and anaerobic digesters and considerations in planning these operations. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Indigenous Food Ways with Dan Cornelius\, UW Madison Law School
DESCRIPTION:“Indigenous Foodways” grows out of Cornelius’s work with the Intertribal Agricultural Council to bring a diverse array of historic seeds back to indigenous communities\, to reconnect with the land through what we eat. Since 2019 cross campus collaborations have resulted in the establishment of an Indigenous Research Garden and sugarbush at the Arboretum. These collaborations are part of a larger effort to better incorporate indigenous perspectives and practices into the campus landscape and course curriculum. His focus is the relationship between the land and indigenous peoples prior to European colonization. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:National Climate Assessment: Midwest Chapter Engagement Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The National Climate Assessment is a Congressionally mandated quadrennial report led by the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP). The report evaluates how climate change affects people and places in the United States. \nTo inform development of the fifth National Climate Assessment\, USGCRP and the author teams will be hosting a series of virtual public engagement workshops. The purpose of the public engagement workshops is to: \nProvide an overview of USGCRP and the National Climate Assessment development process\, including other opportunities for public engagement \nAllow members of the public and assessment authors an opportunity to discuss proposed key topics\, identify priority issues relevant to the chapter\, and share resources \nGive NCA chapter authors an understanding of how workshop participants use assessments\, and what could be done to make the NCA more useful for decision-making \nThe workshop will include a plenary session that provides an overview of the assessment and an introduction to the chapter. In breakout sessions\, participants will have the opportunity to discuss the chapter’s key topics and their own priorities with chapter authors. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Pesticide Applicator Training Program
DESCRIPTION:The UW Pesticide Applicator Training Program has created multiple formats for private applicator trainings to address increased training demand. \nA private applicator is someone that applies restricted use pesticides to produce an agricultural commodity on their own property or the property owned or rented by an employer. Examples of agricultural commodities are grain and forage crops\, fruit crops or horticulture products. A restricted use pesticide can be identified by checking the label of the product you wish to use. \nA Private Applicator Certification is valid for 5 years. There are three steps toward certification: purchasing the training manual\, training and taking the test. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Evaluating Air Quality Resource Concerns
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we discuss how to identify air quality resource concerns and effective mitigation strategies to address observed air quality resource concerns. \nDuring this webinar\, air quality resource concerns and resource concern components will be highlighted. The NRCS air quality resource concerns can be broadly categorized as particulate matter (such as dust or smoke) and gases that create particles in the atmosphere\, greenhouse gases\, odors\, airborne reactive nitrogen\, and ozone precursors (gases that form smog). These emissions can be produced by common agricultural sources\, such as livestock and their activity; tillage\, harvesting\, and other field operations; irrigation engines and other combustion devices; nitrogen fertilizer use; and others. There will be an overview of the air quality resource concerns and their components\, discussion of how to evaluate each component to determine if a resource concern exists\, identification of the conservation practices available for addressing each resource concern component\, and strategies for ensuring that air quality resource concerns are adequately addressed. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Conversations About Conservation: Purple loosestrife bio-control
DESCRIPTION:The Upper Sugar River Watershed Association is involved in purple loosestrife control efforts. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has developed a program to engage citizens in this work\, especially through rearing and releasing biological control insects. Conservationists have found this project to be a practical undertaking for communities and the basis for more effective teaching about plants\, insects\, invasive species\, and wetland ecology. The project supplies a crucial step in turning the tide of an invasive while engaging environmentally active citizens. \nInfo here.
