DESCRIPTION:The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has been evaluating the water quality and quantity benefits of permeable pavements at a site in Madison\, Wisconsin since 2014. USGS monitoring efforts have provided valuable insights regarding how permeable pavements perform as a storm water management practice. This information has been used to develop and update Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) permeable pavement technical standard 1008. This webinar will provide a summary of the USGS permeable pavement monitoring results and how this information has been incorporated in DNR permeable pavement technical standard 1008. DESCRIPTION:The Wisconsin State Cranberry Growers Association (WSCGA) Board agreed Tuesday\, January 5 to move their annual Winter Meeting from an in-person format to a virtual one. The event is held in conjunction with the annual Cranberry School put on by the Wisconsin Cranberry Research and Education Foundation (WCREF). The 2022 Cranberry School will also be moved to a virtual format. \nThe decision was made by the WSCGA Board due to concern over the health and safety of the cranberry community\, speakers\, and Cranberry School attendees in light of the COVID-19 global pandemic’s current trajectory. \nWSCGA President Steven Bartling said\, “This decision wasn’t easy as we were all looking forward to a gathering of our community. The reasons for this decision were simple. We have an increase in health concerns from COVID spread increasing within our communities currently and broad hesitation from our growers\, venders\, and presenters to join a big gathering.” \nThe events were originally planned to take place January 19 and 20 at the Wilderness Resort in Lake Delton and will now take place on the same dates virtually. \nThe following adjustments were made to the event to fit the new virtual format: \n\nRegistration fees for the School will be reduced to $50 per person for members\, $75 for nonmembers. Registration remains open at https://wcref.regfox.com/wisconsin-cranberry-school\nMinor adjustments to the agenda to provide participants with a little more break time during the school.\nThe Winter Trade Show was cancelled\nThe Pesticide Applicator Training session at the Wilderness Resort is cancelled\, growers in need of certification are encouraged to seek a session in their growing region\n\nWSCGA Executive Director Tom Lochner added\, “We are disappointed to cancel the in-person portion of these events\, however the decision was made out of an abundance of caution. We remain committed to providing a valuable experience to Wisconsin’s grower community and are optimistic the new virtual format will expand access to growers who are geographically isolated or who were hesitant about attending the event in-person.”

SUMMARY:The History and Effectiveness of Injurious Wildlife Listing under the “Lacey Act”
DESCRIPTION:As part of the original Federal law known as the “Lacey Act” passed in 1900\, injurious wildlife has been amended several times\, but the purpose has always been to protect the United States from the introduction of invasive and otherwise harmful wildlife. Congress first gave the authority for overseeing injurious wildlife to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and later to the Department of the Interior. Injurious listing prohibits the importation of wild vertebrates\, crustaceans\, and mollusks that can cause harm to wildlife resources\, humans\, and other U.S. interests. However\, most people know about a different provision of the “Lacey Act\,” which is about trafficking of wildlife and plants. This presentation will explain what the “Lacey Act” is and the difference between the injurious and trafficking provisions. It will emphasize how the Service focuses on adding high-risk species to the Federal injurious list before they become established and how effective that has been in preventing the establishment of those injurious animals. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:The Impacts of Flooding and Business Activity and Employment: A Spatial Perspective on Small Business
DESCRIPTION:Severe flooding events often cause significant damage to an area\, including affecting the local economy\, disrupting transportation\, and damaging infrastructure. While raw statistics offer some understanding of crop and property-related damages\, resulting from large-scale floods\, we also need to consider the longer-term impacts and recovery within an area and the interaction between adjacent areas during the recovery process. In this paper\, we examine the impacts of major and minor flood events on business employment and the number of establishments in different sectors of the economy. We find that while flood events had a negative short-run impact on agriculture and particularly small farm establishments\, we find positive impacts in the service sector. When a watershed is shown to have pollution or other issues\, it inspires people to get involved to protect and restore their waterways. By displaying all the information visually\, it gives this data more perspective and transparency which results in the drive for change and innovation. \nHow’s My Waterway answers questions about the health of waters in supporting swimming\, the eating of fish\, drinking water protection and delivery\, the health of aquatic communities\, and the restoration and protection of waterways. SUMMARY:Indigenous Food Ways with Dan Cornelius\, UW Madison Law School
DESCRIPTION:“Indigenous Foodways” grows out of Cornelius’s work with the Intertribal Agricultural Council to bring a diverse array of historic seeds back to indigenous communities\, to reconnect with the land through what we eat. Since 2019 cross campus collaborations have resulted in the establishment of an Indigenous Research Garden and sugarbush at the Arboretum. These collaborations are part of a larger effort to better incorporate indigenous perspectives and practices into the campus landscape and course curriculum. SUMMARY:National Climate Assessment: Midwest Chapter Engagement Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The National Climate Assessment is a Congressionally mandated quadrennial report led by the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP). The report evaluates how climate change affects people and places in the United States. \nTo inform development of the fifth National Climate Assessment\, USGCRP and the author teams will be hosting a series of virtual public engagement workshops. The purpose of the public engagement workshops is to: \nProvide an overview of USGCRP and the National Climate Assessment development process\, including other opportunities for public engagement \nAllow members of the public and assessment authors an opportunity to discuss proposed key topics\, identify priority issues relevant to the chapter\, and share resources \nGive NCA chapter authors an understanding of how workshop participants use assessments\, and what could be done to make the NCA more useful for decision-making \nThe workshop will include a plenary session that provides an overview of the assessment and an introduction to the chapter. In breakout sessions\, participants will have the opportunity to discuss the chapter’s key topics and their own priorities with chapter authors. \nInfo here.
