SUMMARY:Microirrigation for Small Vegetable Farms
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we discuss the basics of microirrigation terminology\, layout\, components\, planning and design considerations with emphasis on small vegetable farms within the context of NRCS Conservation Practice Standard (CPS) Code 441 (Irrigation Systems\, Microirrigation) and its criteria. \nMicroirrigation is defined as frequent application of small quantities of water as drops or miniature streams and spray through emitters or applicators placed along a water delivery pipeline. Micro\, or more specifically drip\, irrigation is the most preferred method of irrigating vegetables in urban and rural settings. Small vegetable farms in rural and peri-urban settings typically range from a fraction of an acre to a few acres in size that may also include low and high tunnels. In urban settings\, it is used to irrigate a host of backyard small containers and raise beds\, rooftop plots\, and larger community gardens to name a few. Regardless of the size\, microirrigation systems must be planned\, designed\, installed\, and maintained properly or the system will perform poorly or even fail. The focus in this webinar is on small vegetable farms in rural settings with limited discussion on the unique challenges faced by irrigating in inner-city and urban environments. Access to capital\, reliable water with acceptable quality\, and initial design and installation are a few of the challenges facing adoption of microirrigation in small vegetable farms. Proper operation and maintenance are equally important. Observations suggest there is a lack of desire on the part of most third-party designers to engage small settings and a need for enhancing farmers’ technical knowledge of micro systems. Climate change has aggravated extreme hazard events such as floods\, droughts\, extreme heat\, and fires that threaten livelihood of communities\, especially for vulnerable populations\, in addition to the sustainability of urban water systems. Conventional urbanization patterns and urban water infrastructure systems are designed based on past climate trends and unable to meet current and future needs under climate change uncertainty. Green infrastructure design as nature-based solutions applied to stormwater management and water conservation strategies aim to restore hydrological functions and provide multiple ecosystem services benefits and building community resilience. To further address climate justice\, it is critical to meaningfully engage communities in co-designing nature-based solutions and evaluating landscape performance outcomes. SUMMARY:A Field Study of Maximum Wave Height\, Total Wave Energy\, and Maximum Wave Power Produced by Four Recreational Boats on a Freshwater Lake
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, with the growth of recreational boating activities\, there has been growing concern over boat-generated waves and propeller wash and their environmental impacts to lakes and rivers. The research reported here was motivated by a need to better understand the characteristics (i.e.\, height \,energy\, and power) of wakes and waves produced by common recreational boats. Four boats were evaluated. Two of the boats were typical recreational boats (i.e.\, non-wakesurf) that are commonly used for tow sports like tubing\, waterskiing\, and wakeboarding\, and the other two boats were wakesurf boats designed specifically for the sport of wakesurfing. Testing involved operating each boat at four distances from the shoreline (225 ft.\, 325 ft.\, 425 ft.\, and 625 ft.) under various conditions (e.g.\, speed\, ballast weight\, trim setting\, etc.). The data show clear differences in wake wave characteristics between the non-wakesurf and wakesurf boats and can be used to inform boat operational distances necessary to attenuate wave heights\, energies\, and powers to levels deemed acceptable. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Predicting restoration outcomes: from concept to practice
DESCRIPTION:Restoration outcomes are notorious for being unpredictable. Similar restoration actions\, carried out on seemingly similar sites\, can result in variable outcomes and this unpredictability challenges our capacity to meet specific goals. In turn\, this points to the need to develop predictive capacities in restoration. But what will this look like and what challenges must be overcome to develop restoration into a predictive science? We outline an approach for predicting restoration outcomes and describe key challenges that must be overcome\, to put this vision into practice. SUMMARY:Managing your Community’s Floodplains Webinar: Substantial Damage Assessments and the SDE Tool
DESCRIPTION:Assessing building damages post-disaster is the preferred method for making substantial damage determinations and offers a number of benefits that should make it easier to administer the Substantial Improvement/Damage (SI/SD) requirements. One benefit is to provide property owners with information about the requirement to bring buildings into compliance before they get very far along with their plans to repair. Another benefit is that owners that have Federal flood insurance policies will more quickly receive the community’s substantial damage determination that they need in order to submit a claim for ICC coverage to their adjuster. Waiting for repair permits to come in poses a challenge to the community because many people begin repairs without getting permits. In addition\, by the time owners apply for permits\, they may have hired design professionals to develop plans for repairs and improvements that do not take into consideration the requirement to bring SI/SD buildings into compliance. \nInfo here.
