SUMMARY:Wildlife Management Adaptation Planning and Practices Course
DESCRIPTION:2/28/2022 – 4/20/2022 \nThe Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science\, Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies\, Midwest Climate Adaptation Science Center\, Michigan Department of Natural Resources\, University of Wisconsin\, and the USDA Northern Forests Climate Hub are offering a wildlife habitat-focused version of the Adaptation Planning and Practices online course for land managers and professionals. \nThis unique opportunity provides hands-on training in considering climate change information and identifying adaptation actions relevant to wildlife habitat management and conservation. Participants will receive coaching and feedback while using the Adaptation Workbook to develop their own real-world climate adaptation project. The course consists of seven weekly web sessions\, three discussion sessions\, with independent work time occurring between sessions. \nCourse information will focus on terrestrial wildlife management\, including population management as well as habitat management. We will give preference to project teams from the Midwest and Northeast US\, but applicants from other regions should apply and may be accepted if space allows. \nThrough this course\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify locally-important climate change impacts\, challenges\, and opportunities\nDevelop specific actions to help wildlife adapt to changing conditions\nUse the Adaptation Workbook to create their own “climate-informed” projects\nBetter communicate with stakeholders about key climate change impacts\, challenges\, and opportunities\nAccess post-training support from NIACS staff during project planning and implementation\n\nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge: 10 years strong and beyond
DESCRIPTION:Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge (Walworth County\, WI and McHenry County\, IL) was first established by the USFWS in 2012. The Refuge boundary employs a “Cores and Corridors” concept for wildlife preservation with a focus on migratory and grassland birds. Vince Mosca and Paul Bruett will discuss the establishment of this Urban National Wildlife Refuge and its goals and will share progress made in land acquisition over the last 10 years. Finally\, they’ll talk about the Refuge’s role in regional climate change resiliency and biodiversity management. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Global Council for Science and the Environment 2022
DESCRIPTION:Negative climate tipping points\, with catastrophic consequences\, are undeniably bearing down upon us. Pathways to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals\, and the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement\, are narrowing. \nYet\, researchers have also begun to identify cases where policy interventions can leverage tipping points to jumpstart positive changes. From electric vehicle markets to food systems to climate justice\, there is clear untapped potential for a new framework of solutions centered on the concept of reverse tipping cascades and thresholds for climate recovery. \nResearchers have described this potential as “plausible grounds for hope”. \nThe GCSE 2022 Virtual Conference will be a forum for interdisciplinary learning and collaboration to shift our global climate strategy. Together\, we can leverage positive tipping points to accelerate climate action and achieve our collective goals for people and the planet. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Picturesque: Re-Envisioning Human-Land Relationships using Photography
DESCRIPTION:Have popular images of mountains and waterfalls\, like those found in nature calendars\, diluted our appreciation for our local nature spaces? Is there a way to nurture and deepen our appreciation for everyday ecologies through deep observation and communion with the land? Well-versed in Leopold and the convergence of artistic and scientific practices\, Dr. Edgar Cardenas (author of Between Two Pines) shares and discusses his own photographic work exploring the subtleties of human-land relationships and Leopold Fellow Jackson Newman shares how Cardenas’s work has inspired his own photography on the Leopold Memorial Reserve. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:The Key to Crop Nutrition: Establishing Biology at Planting to Supply Nutrients
DESCRIPTION:We are seeing more and more evidence that shows the important role that biology plays in crop health and quality. We now know that biology in the soil can deliver more of the crop’s nutrients than we expect and that key realization is being too often ignored. But for our crops to take advantage of soil biology\, we first need to have vigorous microbial populations established at germination. \nInfo here.
