SUMMARY:Wall Street's Farm Bill
DESCRIPTION:This spring Grassland 2.0 is once again hosting our monthly Digital Dialogue Series! In the fall of 2021 the Digital Dialogues Series focused on what makes a healthy agroecosystem. This spring\, we are changing lanes and will be focusing on the levers of change for our agricultural system. Tune in and hear about the policies\, legal reforms\, and partnerships needed to regenerative farming and balance the power in our food system from the input suppliers\, processors\, and retailers to the farmers\, workers\, small business and consumers. \nFirst up is Austin Frerick who will discuss “Wall Street’s Farm Bill”. Frerick is the Deputy Director of the Thurman Arnold Project at Yale University\, an initiative that brings together faculty\, students\, and scholars to collaborate on research related to competition policy and antitrust enforcement. He is also a Senior Fellow at Data for Progress and is on the Board of Directors for the Socially Responsible Agriculture Project. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:EPA Introduction to ECHO: EJSCREEN
DESCRIPTION:EPA will be hosting its next Enforcement and Compliance History Online (ECHO) webinar\, “Introduction to ECHO: EJSCREEN”. This webinar will focus on how to use the ECHO facility searches to learn about environmental and demographic data from EPA’s EJSCREEN. EPA will demonstrate examples of using ECHO searches and reports to view EJSCREEN data and how to interpret that information. The webinar will cover how to search for environmental and demographic data in a specific community\, how to view and interpret EJSCREEN index values at the location of a facility\, and how to visualize EJSCREEN data on an interactive map. Registration for this webinar\, as well as links to tutorials and recorded webinars are available on EPA’s ECHO Training Website. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Spurring Action on Climate Change through Artistic Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Join us as speakers Dianne Brakarsh\, Russ Bennett\, and John Greenler discuss 350 Madison Arts Collective. 350 Madison climate change activists find that bringing art and live dance into their communications can significantly increase turnout and engagement. This is true with issues ranging from stopping tar-sands oil pipelines\, to raising awareness on how the fossil fuel industry is funded. The 350 Madison Arts Collective has been known to show up to perform mock weddings\, Broadway-style dances\, and to perform as communities of environmentally threatened animals. Behind the fun is a serious effort to mobilize people to take action on climate change and work toward a just and clean energy future. \nOur 2022 Climate & Energy Series continues to explore how Wisconsin leaders are moving beyond incrementalism to transformational action that communicates clear messages. These conversations are designed to foster discussion and peer learning among experts\, practitioners\, and climate-concerned community members regarding local solutions to global environmental challenges. Join us for these virtual discussions to build a collective sense of purpose\, knowledge\, and action as we face the many challenges of our time. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Testing Emphasis Message Frames and Metaphors on Social Media to Engage Boaters to Learn about Preventing the Spread of Zebra Mussels
DESCRIPTION:Message frames are often used to communicate about invasive species due to the additional meaning they provide. They appear in calls to action like “join the battle against invasive species\,” “unwelcome exotics\,” or “Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers.” However\, little is known about how stakeholders respond to these message frames. This research tested five common message emphasis frames used in invasive species communication. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Drivers of Exceptional Coastal Warming in the Northeastern United States
DESCRIPTION:The Northeastern United States (NEUS) and the adjacent Northwest Atlantic Shelf (NWS) have emerged as warming hotspots\, but the connection between them has remained unexplored. Here we use observational datasets to disuse the role of oceanic and atmospheric processes in driving rapid warming trends along the NEUS coast\, test the fidelity of climate models to capture the observed warming pattern\, and discuss the need for more nuanced climate assessments to understand the impacts on human and natural systems. This talk will draw from an article Karmalkar and Horton recently published in Nature Climate Change. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Microplastics Debris Pollution Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dr. Lorena M. Rios Mendoza\, Natural Sciences Department/Chemistry and Physics Program\, University of Wisconsin-Superior \nMicroplastic debris is one of the most cited emergent pollutants in the last decade with a potential hazard to aquatic life because of the known potential to adsorb persistent organic pollutants\, and they can be easily confused with natural food. Microplastic debris is a complicated issue not just because we do not understand the mechanisms for the negative impacts on different ecosystems and organisms\, including humans\, but also because of the challenges for their analysis when the particles decrease in size from microplastics to nanoplastics. Unfortunately\, there is little information on plastic materials’ composition\, distribution\, or fate in freshwater ecosystems. Join us to learn more. \nThis webinar is being sponsored by the Great Lakes Committee. \nIf you do not receive a confirmation email upon submission of your registration\, contact Penny at Penny@wisconsinlandwater.org \nRegister by February 15. SUMMARY:Communicating for Inclusion
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on lessons and examples from the first events in this series\, we will consider strategies for making NASA citizen science project communications more inclusive. \n“Inclusive science communication” was defined in a 2020 report by the Metcalf Institute at the University of Rhode Island as “any effort to engage people in science\, tech\, engineering\, math and medicine that is grounded in inclusion\, equity\, and intersectionality.” \nProject websites\, videos\, and other online materials can attract or deter the interest of new participants. This requires making the project opportunity understandable\, which is not easy. Making participation appealing to many audiences – offering a sense of relevance\, significance\, or belonging – requires more thought. Imagining – and then articulating – what your volunteers might expect in return for their time and contributions is likewise important. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:"Soil Your Undies" Soil Health Exploration Series
DESCRIPTION:To reach new audiences via virtual formats while also encouraging scientific experimentation\, Greenville County Soil and Water Conservation District\, SC recently developed an online workshop to share simple ways to measure soil health. Each registrant received a kit to measure soil health using easy to find items\, like cotton underwear\, and all learning materials were available online or emailed to participants. During the webinar\, the district will discuss the successes\, budge\, and some lessons learned from presenting a program like this in an online format. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Restoring The Little Things That Run The World
DESCRIPTION:A recent UN report predicts that as many as 1 million species will disappear from planet earth because of human activities. Many of these are insects and nearly all species at risk rely on insects. Insects have already declined 45% since 1974. The most alarming part of this statistic is that we don’t seem to care\, despite the fact that a world without insects is a world without humans! So how do we create beautiful landscapes brimming with life; landscapes that support the pollinators\, herbivores\, detritivores\, predators and parasitoids that run the ecosystems we depend on? Tallamy will remind us of the many essential roles insects play\, and describe the simple changes we must make in our landscapes and our attitudes to keep insects on the ground\, in the air and yes\, on our plants. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Growing Seedlings Indoors
DESCRIPTION:Some vegetables should always be planted outside in the ground\, directly from seed (like carrots & radishes). But in our climate\, other vegetables – like tomatoes\, onions and Brussels sprouts – should be planted in pots or trays indoors\, before the weather outside has warmed up. With a good in-home set up and some careful timing\, you can grow healthy seedlings that will be ready to transplant out into your garden! Growing your own seedlings is also a great way to get some beautiful green plants into your home in late winter\, plus it’s often extremely cost-effective. \nInfo here.
