SUMMARY:Using Wetlands as Solutions to Reduce Flood Damage Risks in the Lake Superior Basin
DESCRIPTION:To help communities find cost-effective solutions to their flooding and infrastructure problems\, the Wisconsin Wetlands Association (WWA) is aiming to promote and demonstrate the concept of Natural Flood Management (NFM) in the Lake Superior Basin. NFM is a watershed-based approach for implementing ‘slow the flow’ practices that incorporate natural river and landscape processes to store water and limit the erosive energy of runoff. In this presentation\, Kyle Magyera will highlight the work of the interdisciplinary partnership WWA has convened to study the impacts of erosion-induced wetland drainage. He’ll also describe how the partnership is identifying opportunities to reconnect floodplains and restore hydrology in headwater wetlands and streams to build climate-resilient natural infrastructure. SUMMARY:Invasive Insects: Impacts in Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:Insects can cause serious damage by feeding on crops\, and insect species that have been introduced from other countries can often cause the most serious economic damage. This webinar will cover some of the basic biology and ecology of invasive species and explain why they are able to outbreak so severely in new areas. We will also discuss different ways of responding to introductions of new pest species using examples from past introductions as case examples of management methods developed to cope with new pests. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Farms Under Threat: The State of the States
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, March 20\, 2020\, American Farmland Trust will release the next report from its Farms Under Threat initiative: “Farms Under Threat: The State of the States.” This event will describe our groundbreaking findings and what must be done to protect our irreplaceable farmland and ranchland. It will also feature a discussion with NRCS Chief Matthew Lohr and California Secretary of Agriculture Karen Ross\, who will share their perspectives on what our findings mean for the future of agriculture. The session will include audience participation\, live polling\, and multiple opportunities to ask questions and engage in dialogue. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Agriculture and Drinking Water: How it Affects Your Operation
DESCRIPTION:Eric Fuchs knows a thing or two about agriculture and water regulatory issues because he’s seen a thing or two. He lives on a diversified livestock operation where he’s been applying holistic planned grazing for more than eight years and he’s employed by the Missouri Rural Water Association as a source water protection technician. Eric travels the entire state of Missouri working with small communities\, helping them protect their drinking water. In this webinar\, he will share his firsthand knowledge and experience regarding agricultural land use and its effect on drinking water and what water regulations may mean to you and your farming operation. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Managing Your Woodlands with Prescribed Fire
DESCRIPTION:Prescribed fire is used as a forest management tool for wildfire risk reduction\, wildlife management\, and many other purposes. The presenters will address considerations related to prescribed burning such as benefits and uses\, liability and risk\, and technical and financial assistance. This information will be most useful for landowners who are considering or are currently using prescribed fire on their land. Training resources available to landowners will also be discussed. \nMore information here.
