SUMMARY:Producer-Led Webinar: No-Tilling in Heavy Red Clays
DESCRIPTION:Live from Redline Dairy Farm LLC in Belgium\, Wisconsin\, Matt Winker will discuss no-tilling for the past seven years in heavy red clay soils that make-up their farmland. Hear how Matt made the impossible\, possible and about other conservation practices that have worked on their farm like interseeding and planting green using a roller-crimper. Matt and his wife Sarah milk 100 cows on their dairy operation. Andy Holschbach of the Ozaukee County Land and Water Management Department will interview Matt about being a member of the Ozaukee County Demonstration Farms Network and he will also share what the Milwaukee River Clean Farms Families Producer-Led Group is up to this summer. \n\n\n\nThis webinar is part of the Planting New Ideas\, Growing Conservation producer-led webinar series that provides an opportunity to listen to an in-depth conversation about a specific conservation practice that a producer is implementing on their farm. Producers will talk about the details of implementing\, challenges experienced\, and tips on how to get started. Listeners and participants can ask questions throughout and after the topic discussion. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Creating and Maintaining Upland Habitat
DESCRIPTION:Creating and maintaining upland habitat for wildlife is important to many landowners. This presentation will cover the habitat requirements of many upland wildlife species and how forestry practices can be used to improve their habitat. Financial and technical resources\, that are available to landowners\, will also be reviewed. H abitat loss is the greatest threat to wildlife conservation. Landowners can manage forestland to maintain and even create essential habitat for various species of wildlife. Understanding the relationship between wildlife and your woodlands is critical to learning the necessary steps to improve habitat on your property. With planning and appropriate management\, you can favor the animals and plants you most desire on your property. \nMore information here.

SUMMARY:Aquatic Plant ID Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In place of the usual hands-on summer aquatic plant identification workshops\, we are holding one virtual webinar this year. We will be covering a similar set of species as we would at the hands-on workshops\, and the day will include rotations with multiple staff covering different groups of plants. There will be time for Q&A after each group of species\, and a longer Q&A session at the end. We realize it won’t be the same as the hands-on sessions with live plants and field ID practice\, but we hope this is a valuable alternative to prepare those of you that will be doing point-intercept surveys or other aquatic plant work this season. This webinar will also be recorded for later viewing. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Conservation Drainage - Managing Water for the Future
DESCRIPTION:Join the North Central Climate Collaborative for their next webinar Conservation Drainage – Managing Water for the Future featuring John McMaine. \nTile drainage is widespread throughout the Midwest.  As weather patterns continue to shift toward more precipitation outside of the growing season and less precipitation during the growing season\, water management will need to continue to adapt to provide resilience. Conservation drainage is a concept that incorporates methods of storing water or treating water in the landscape or edge-of-field to increase resilience and improve water quality while maintaining the agronomic benefits of tile drainage.  This webinar will cover some of the recent research in conservation drainage\, how they can be incorporated into new and existing practices\, and what the future of conservation drainage might look like. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Live Roller-Crimper and Weed Zapper Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:The Iowa State University Extension\, Outreach Organic Ag Program\, and PFI is planning a virtual field day to demonstrate rolling rye in an organic no-till system at the Levi Lyle Farm in Keota\, Iowa\, weather-permitting. Lyle expects the rye to be past anthesis at that date\, which is necessary for proper termination of the rye crop where soybeans will be planted. To learn more email info@practicalfarmers.org

SUMMARY:Webinar: Responding to Farm Stress
DESCRIPTION:The Brown and Dane County Extension are hosting a program for agribusiness professionals to help them learn to recognize and address farm stress and farmer health. The program will be hosted as two consecutive sessions on May 21\, 2020. Dane and Brown County will host the program at 1:00-2:30 pm. The program will be offered via zoom/video conference \nThe program will train agribusiness professionals in Question\, Persuade\, Refer (QPR). Agriculture professionals and consultants work closely with farmers and are often in a position to recognize acute stress. Given the appropriate training and skills\, they may help recognize when stress is overwhelming\, and could refer farmers to appropriate resources. \nThe mission of the Question\, Persuade\, Refer program is to reduce suicidal behaviors and save lives by providing innovative\, practical and proven suicide prevention training that can make a positive difference in the life of someone you know. QPR consists of these three skills: Question…a person about suicide\, Persuade…someone to get help and\, Refer…someone to the appropriate resource \nThere is no cost to attend the program. Each session is limited to 20 attendees. Register at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/question-persuade-referqpr-training-for-ag-business-professionals-registration-105261199080?aff=QPR. \nTo request program accommodations in languages other than English\, or based on disability\, contact Maria Jose Fuenzalida at maria.fuenzalidavalenzuela@wisc.edu Dane County\, Elizabeth Binversie at elizabeth.binversie@browncountywi.gov Brown County.

SUMMARY:Gaining Ground - Soil as a Renewable Resource?
DESCRIPTION:The soil health nexus for their soil health digital cafe series. \nCan health of a degraded soil be regenerated? We use the term ‘regenerative agriculture\,’ but what does it mean and does science suggest degraded soils can realistically be brought back to original productivity levels?  If it can\, how long will it take? Tune in to hear from Rick Cruse of the Iowa Water Center as he discusses the time required to potentially regenerate components of a healthy soil and identify the most critical soil degradation processes common with today’s agriculture. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Lake Ice - The Invisible Present and Place
DESCRIPTION:The decline in ice cover on lakes has been an early warning for the onset of today’s climate change. Records of ice-on and ice-off dates and the duration of ice cover were commonly kept by citizens over the last 50 to 150 years often prior to the establishment of weather stations. These records allow us to visualize lake ice in the context of change that occurred over decades to centuries. One Shinto Shrine record began in the 1400s in Japan. Ice records allow us to see what has been happening not only to our lake\, or Wisconsin lakes\, but to lakes around the Northern Hemisphere. Declines already have affected human uses of winter lake ice. Several lakes in Wisconsin experience winters without complete ice cover; such winters are forecast to become more common in Wisconsin’s future. Declines in ice has increased winter drownings\, and has decreased days for winter fishing\, festivals\, skating\, iceboating\, skiing\, walking\, and viewing\, as well as transportation on winter ice roads. Climate change has been eroding a part of our “sense of place” for those of us who include lake ice in our lives. \nRegister here.
