SUMMARY:Badger Swine Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Wisconsin may be known as the dairy state\, but ties to swine production in Wisconsin run deep. Historically\, immigrant populations demanded pork for the manufacture of sausage and other products\, leading to as much as 80% of all Wisconsin farms having pigs on the farm in the early twentieth century. Pig farming looks different today with less total farms that have pigs on them\, but raising pigs continues to be an important part of agriculture in Wisconsin. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Leading for Racial Equity Series: Learning and deconstructing structures of power and privilege in state and local government
DESCRIPTION:Even when we don’t recognize them\, many of our local government programs are built on structures of power and privilege. This webinar will help identify and break down these structures in the pursuit of developing more equitable and inclusive local governments. During the webinar\, you¿ll develop a shared understanding of concepts related to deconstructing inequitable systems and navigating change through a lens of racial equity and inclusion\, build a shared understanding of the historic roots and present-day manifestations of inequity\, and begin to explore the conditions needed\, for self and for organizations\, to undergo and sustain change toward racial equity and inclusion. SUMMARY:Practices for Protecting Local Farmland
DESCRIPTION:Farmland protection is critical to preserving our ability to grow food for our communities in the future\, among many other benefits including mitigating climate change and that sustainable agriculture can provide. Proactively protecting farmland is more important now more than ever\, given accelerating farmland loss and increasing urban development pressure on peri-urban and rural landscapes in Wisconsin and across the US. Wisconsin’s state and local governments have unique opportunities to enact innovative farmland protection measures\, and the opportunity to position our state as a leader in safeguarding the future of agriculture. Learn about local-\, regional-\, and state-level opportunities in farmland protection\, hear about innovative local government programs that are working to protect farmland\, and engage in a peer discussion about possible solutions. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Cultivating Your Farm's Financial Future
DESCRIPTION:A new program from University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension educators in collaboration with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture\, Trade\, and Consumer Protection’s Farm Center staff will help Wisconsin farmers make decisions and plan for their future. An introductory web meeting will be held on Friday\, Dec. 10\, 2021\, from 11 am – noon. \nThe program\, Cultivating Your Farm’s Financial Future\, is being piloted with a select group of farmers in early 2022. \nBy the end of the program\, participants will gain a sense of financial decision-making control and make key decisions about their farm and its future. \nThe program will also help farmers reduce stress. Planning for the future has been shown to be an effective way for farmers to increase peace of mind\, improve relationships and communication on the farm\, and assist with business resiliency. The program will also give farmers tools to help cope with stress. \nFarms interested in participating in this free and confidential opportunity are encouraged to attend to learn more about the program and to meet other participants and program organizers. \nFor more information about the December 10th Zoom or about the entire program\, contact Joy Kirkpatrick at joy.kirkpatrick@wisc.edu or 608-263-3485. \nRegister here.
