SUMMARY:2021 Virtual CAFO Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Instead of 9 locations around the state\, the 2021 workshops will be 1½ – 2 hours over four days\, Feb 2-5\, 2020\, 9:30 am. \nThe Feb 2 session will focus on farms that are near permit size or thinking of expanding above the 1\,000 animal unit threshold in the next few years. The Feb 3\, 4\, and 5 sessions are for farms that already have a permit\, their consultants\, and agency staff working with them. \nRegistration is $10 per person for one day or $20 per person for the entire series. A $5 per person late fee will be charges for registrations received after 11:59PM January 31st. Recordings of the sessions will be made available to those who register. \nHosted by UW Madison Division of Extension in collaboration with Wisconsin DNR\, these workshops are designed for livestock operations near or at WPDES permit size (CAFOs) — owners/management and key staff\, their agronomic and engineering consultants\, and agency staff and others who work with these operations. \nRegister here.

DESCRIPTION:Wetter weather patterns and fieldwork challenges have led many producers to consider purchasing their own tile plow or adding to their existing drainage system.  Knowing how to properly design\, lay out and install a system prevents costly mistakes.  Extension in Wisconsin\, Illinois and Iowa are partnering to host a 4-day virtual Tile Drainage School\, 8AM – 12PM CT on March 8\, 9\, 11 and 16 for producers and tile contractors. \nIn this introductory-level course\, drainage experts from all three University Extensions will walk participants through assessing the field prior to installation\, choosing the best lateral spacing\, slope and outfall considerations\, finding old tile systems and outlets/lift stations.  Agency experts will discuss the steps to avoid regulatory pitfalls\, and participants will be able to lay out a system and receive feedback on their approach. \nThe cost is $50 for the first person from a farm/tile installation business\, and $25 for each additional person. \nTo register\, visit http://go.wisc.edu/39v013. \nFor more information\, contact Kevin Erb\, UW Extension Conservation Professional Training Program at Kevin.Erb@wisc.edu or 920.391.4652

SUMMARY:Weed Management When Establishing Pollinator Plantings
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Mark Renz to learn more about weed management for greater success of your pollinator plantings! He will share his research about the impact of cover crops\, herbicides and mowing on establishing native plants for pollinators. Results from over 30 pollinator plantings in Wisconsin will provide insight as to what factors you should consider when planning a pollinator planting. \nPresented by Mark Renz (PhD)\, professor and weed specialist with the University of Wisconsin-Madison. With over 20 years of experience with management of invasive plants\, Dr. Renz provides technical information and educational opportunities for agency staff\, consultants\, companies\, and citizens concerned about invasive plants. He also is the president of the Midwest invasive Plant Network whose mission is to reduce the impact of invasive plants in the Midwestern United States.

Hosted by the Lake Superior Reserve’s Coastal Training Program and the Lake Superior Collaborative\, this series is designed to help you gain confidence in your communication skills whether you are a scientific researcher\, government employee\, or in any line of work related to science or Lake Superior coastal management. This series will alternate between virtual workshops and webinars from January through May of 2021. \nThis session will focus on communicating how a changing climate affects conservation and management goals sometimes feels like a complex and difficult challenge to overcome\, but with some practice and a few tips and tricks\, everyone can take steps to effectively engage partners and stakeholders on this topic. In this presentation\, Danielle Shannon from the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science will share a basic recipe for creating meaningful messages and communications related to climate change\, land management\, and conservation practices in Northern Wisconsin. Attendees will learn how to make clear connections between the places we care about and the many potential climate related risks and impacts.

Even if you’re not especially tech savvy or don’t have an interest in becoming a social media maven\, basic skills are necessary to navigate this new (and likely long-lasting) digital environment. In this workshop\, attendees will learn how to communicate in a clear and compelling fashion via digital and social media. Skills you’ll learn from AGU’s Sharing Science team will include how to: \n\nEstablish and cultivate an online presence\nChoose between mediums for online science communication\nUse different tools and techniques based on the platform\nIncorporate storytelling via multimedia into your messaging\n\nThe American Geophysical Union’s Sharing Science program provides scientists with the skills\, tools\, and opportunities they need to communicate science with any audience.
