SUMMARY:Badger Swine Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Wisconsin may be known as the dairy state\, but ties to swine production in Wisconsin run deep. Historically\, immigrant populations demanded pork for the manufacture of sausage and other products\, leading to as much as 80% of all Wisconsin farms having pigs on the farm in the early twentieth century. Pig farming looks different today with less total farms that have pigs on them\, but raising pigs continues to be an important part of agriculture in Wisconsin. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Leading for Racial Equity Series: Learning and deconstructing structures of power and privilege in state and local government
DESCRIPTION:Even when we don’t recognize them\, many of our local government programs are built on structures of power and privilege. This webinar will help identify and break down these structures in the pursuit of developing more equitable and inclusive local governments. During the webinar\, you¿ll develop a shared understanding of concepts related to deconstructing inequitable systems and navigating change through a lens of racial equity and inclusion\, build a shared understanding of the historic roots and present-day manifestations of inequity\, and begin to explore the conditions needed\, for self and for organizations\, to undergo and sustain change toward racial equity and inclusion. This session will be led by the nINA Collective\, a multicultural group who bring decades of experience and expertise in systems change\, equity and inclusion capacity building in local government. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Complexities in Predicting Harmful Algal Blooms
DESCRIPTION:Predicting when and where conditions are ripe for harmful algal blooms would ideally reduce the bloom’s impact on water quality and mitigation costs\, so why is harmful algal bloom prediction so complex? \nTune into our upcoming webinar to hear from Justin Chaffin\, Senior Researcher and Research Coordinator at Ohio State University and Stone Laboratory and Katie Foreman\, Physical Scientist at the US EPA\, as they discuss their research on the ecology and physiology of harmful algal blooms and how this work can be used to help solve the prediction puzzle! \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Practices for Protecting Local Farmland
DESCRIPTION:Farmland protection is critical to preserving our ability to grow food for our communities in the future\, among many other benefits including mitigating climate change and that sustainable agriculture can provide. Proactively protecting farmland is more important now more than ever\, given accelerating farmland loss and increasing urban development pressure on peri-urban and rural landscapes in Wisconsin and across the US. Wisconsin’s state and local governments have unique opportunities to enact innovative farmland protection measures\, and the opportunity to position our state as a leader in safeguarding the future of agriculture. Learn about local-\, regional-\, and state-level opportunities in farmland protection\, hear about innovative local government programs that are working to protect farmland\, and engage in a peer discussion about possible solutions. \nInfo here.

SUMMARY:Building Human Capital in Conservation and Watershed Work
DESCRIPTION:People are the ultimate drivers of change. That is no exception when it comes to achieving clean water and conservation goals in the Midwest. Human capital\, or an individual’s skills and confidence to perform their job\, is a critical ingredient of the power of people. Yet\, in watershed management\, it is a limiting and often overlooked resource. Tune into this edition of The Current Webinar Series as we discuss new research and programming aimed at building human capital in conservation and watershed work. \nInfo here.
